In Port Chester, which is among Westchester's poorest villages, attendance is up at the soup kitchen run by St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Westchester Avenue, the Rev. Hilario Albert said.
Usually in the summer, 40 or 50 people come for the free dinner that the church provides on Sunday and an interfaith group provides on Monday. This summer has brought about 75 diners a night. But Albert noticed the change in the economy even this past winter, before gasoline prices reached $4 a gallon, he said. In the winter, the number of diners per night doubled from 75 to 150, Albert said.
"Now we even see people who have jobs coming to eat dinner," he said. "And we see an increase in people on Social Security coming in. Sometimes it's a decision - buy food or buy gas - and they say. 'If I have $20 and I can get food for free on the weekend, then I can use the money for gas or food during the week.'"

On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, "Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me." Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, "Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me." These will ask Him, "When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?" And Jesus will answer them, "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!
