03/20/11 Grisly Accident As A Port Chester Man Gets Entangled In A Stump Grinder

'Possibly life threatening' injury in Greenwich power tool accident

A Port Chester, N.Y., man was hospitalized with potentially life-threatening injuries after both arms and one leg became entangled in the grinding wheel of a large mechanical stump grinder he was using at a North Street home Friday afternoon, police said.

"They are serious injuries, possibly life-threatening," said Lt. Kraig Gray, spokesman for Greenwich Police. "One of the workers got caught in a stump grinder."

Police did not identify the man, who was taken to Stamford Hospital, because they are seeking to notify his family, Gray said.

Another tree service worker turned off the stump grinder -- a piece of equipment that removes tree stumps with a rotating cutting disk that chips away the wood -- and freed the injured man, Gray said.

The injured man was part of a group of four workers at the 537 North St. location.
The uninjured workers were questioned by police and remained on the scene waiting for an investigator from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.....

....The property was sold in 2005 for $3 million by Margot M. Tusa to 537 North St. LLC, according to real estate sales records. The homeowner's name is not known.

A man in a Range Rover Sport sport utility vehicle arrived at the scene. The man, wearing a white shirt and tie, spoke with police officers before appearing to return to the large home.

According to the online real estate site, the 10,900-square-foot home has six beds and seven and a half baths and sits on an approximately three-acre lot.

Friday's accident is the latest in a series of serious outdoor work incidents to happen in Greenwich.
