RYE TOWN - A local Democratic leader threw a jab at Supervisor Joseph Carvin last week, charging the newly elected Republican went back on his word in his first week in office.

"His big promise (in the campaign) was not to give out these no-bid professional service contracts," said Gary Stracuzzi, Port Chester's Democratic Party chair. "This is the fastest I've seen someone break a major campaign promise."

In his first meeting as town supervisor on Jan. 8, Carvin awarded no-bid hires to Sam Terenzi as the town's new accountant and Paul Noto as soon-to-be town attorney. Stracuzzi said the decision contradicted Carvin's campaign last fall, where he repeatedly blasted the past administration's use of no-bid contracts - critiques echoed by a New York State Comptroller's report on the town.....

....Noto is a partner at Strategic Political Consulting, a firm that spearheaded Carvin's campaign. Carvin said Noto's campaign work was "not determinate in any way of my decision-making process."....

...."It wasn't fair that every failing was blamed on Mr. Terenzi," he added. "I'm thrilled he has the opportunity to clear his reputation.".....

Port ChesterPoignant story about WWII vets

I enjoyed reading the Jan 11 story ("Veteran remembers sergeant who saved his life") of World War II veterans Carmine Scimia and Burt Keller. It is so poignant to hear the stories of the deep bonds these young men and women formed through their bravery and heroism while serving their country.

Back in November 2004, I had the privilege of being part of a reunion between my dad and his war buddy. My dad had not seen his friend in 59 years since serving together in the 8th Armored Division in Europe. To have viewed this touching moment still brings tears to my eyes.

Unfortunately, my dad passed away less than two years later, but I am so grateful that he had this brief reunion. To hear Mr. Scimia's story helped to bring back the fond memories of listening to my dad and his recollections of the war years. I miss him dearly.

God bless the World War II veterans, who are leaving us much too quickly.

Port Chester looks to combine treasurer, clerk jobs

PORT CHESTER - Mayor Dennis Pilla is proposing to merge the village's clerk and treasurer positions, and to give the current treasurer a raise to take over the combined job.

The move is part of a broader proposal from the mayor to reorganize portions of Port Chester's government that also includes creating a legal department that answers to the Board of Trustees instead of the village manager.

A public hearing is set for both proposals Tuesday. The village board will vote on both items following the hearing.

"We're trying to improve the overall efficiency of the village," Pilla said. "We're taking on more of a private-sector model."

Pilla said the clerk-treasurer proposal was prompted after Keith Rang's resignation as clerk in June.

The mayor said Rang "has been difficult to replace," and that the village has had difficulty finding a clerk candidate with strong management experience. Also, Treasurer Anthony Siligato's office is "understaffed," Pilla said.

Pilla said merging the remaining employees in the clerk's office with the treasurer's office could help Siligato focus on more management responsibilities.

"This is the best efficiency move to make here," Pilla said.....

Port Chester horror: Reported break-in by shotgun-toting man in 'Jason' mask
Journal News
PORT CHESTER - A village man reported that an intruder, wielding a shotgun and wearing a mask like Jason in 'Friday the 13th,' kicked open his door last night and stole his car keys.

Police didn't see the alleged assailant when they responded but noted that the door indeed had been damaged, said Port Chester police Lt. James Ladeairous

A 25-year-old resident of 55 Grove St. called 911 shortly before 11 p.m. to report that a suspicious man was knocking on the door to his basement apartment. The caller said he peered through the window curtain and saw that a guy in a white hockey mask and black clothing was pointing a gun at him. The resident ran upstairs to a connecting first-floor apartment to hide.

By the time police arrived, the reported gunman was nowhere to be found, though Ladeairous noted the door latch had been kicked free and the knob had been busted.

"He said he had no idea why the man was there," Ladeairous said. "He said nothing appeared to be missing from his apartment except his car keys, which were on a ring inside the house."...

Cops: Fleeing shoplifter knocks over school kids
Journal News
PORT CHESTER - A shoplifter knocked over several children after he fled from a Kohl's department store Friday and ran through the playground of a nearby grammar school, police said.

Anthony Correa, 41, of 84 Glen Ave. in Port Chester was eventually tackled by police in the John F. Kennedy school gymnasium and charged with a litany of crimes, police Lt. James Ladeairous said.

Police said Correa entered the Kohl's at 431 Boston Post Road shortly before 3 p.m. and tried to leave with about $1,700 worth of DVD players, coats and shirts. When a security guard chased him, he dropped the stolen goods in the parking lot and ran.

Police said they caught up with him at a Bally's fitness center, but he escaped by hopping a fence. He then ran to the school on Olivia Street a few blocks away.

"He ran through the playground while bumping into and knocking children over," Ladeairous said. "Then he ran into the school's gym where he was apprehended by an officer who tackled him."....

Kings cake rules on holiday

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. - At a Mexican pastry shop here Friday, the wreath-shaped cakes baked with Jesus figurines inside were fit for a king - three kings to be exact.

Rosca de Reyes, or three kings cake, is served on El Dia de los Reyes, or the Day of the Kings.

Every year at about this time, Hispanic Catholics around the world celebrate this holiday, which is rooted in the biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to take gifts to baby Jesus.

In Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries where Santa Claus isn't acknowledged, children receive Christmas gifts from los reyes magos, or the wise men. They drop off gifts on the night of Jan. 5 and they are opened the next day. Read more

Greene said the woman has called Powell at least 15 times since the alleged incident and has asked his friends in Port Chester to help her find him. He also noted that his client is a business owner and has no criminal record....
