03/26/11 The Side Of Port Chester That The Westmore News Wont Show You
The Journal News Reports....
In Port Chester, which is among Westchester's poorest villages, attendance is up at the soup kitchen run by St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Westchester Avenue, the Rev. Hilario Albert said.
Usually in the summer, 40 or 50 people come for the free dinner that the church provides on Sunday and an interfaith group provides on Monday. This summer has brought about 75 diners a night. But Albert noticed the change in the economy even this past winter, before gasoline prices reached $4 a gallon, he said. In the winter, the number of diners per night doubled from 75 to 150, Albert said.
"Now we even see people who have jobs coming to eat dinner," he said. "And we see an increase in people on Social Security coming in. Sometimes it's a decision - buy food or buy gas - and they say. 'If I have $20 and I can get food for free on the weekend, then I can use the money for gas or food during the week.'"
MAYBE IF YOU HaVE A FEW EXTRA BUCKS, YOU SHOULD STOP BY AND SEE REVEREND HILARIO ALBERT OR BILLY VACCARO WHO HELPS FEED THE POOR AT HOLY ROSARY CHURCH.
On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, "Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me." Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, "Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me." These will ask Him, "When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?" And Jesus will answer them, "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!
1 Samuel. 2:8 He lifts the poor from the dust-- Yes, from a pile of ashes-- And treats them as princes sitting in the seats of honor. For all the earth is the Lord's And he has set the world in order.
Psalms. 82:3 Give fair judgment to the poor man, the afflicted, the fatherless, the destitute.
Proverbs. 19:17 When you help the poor you are lending to the Lord--and he pays wonderful interest on your loan!
Proverbs. 14:31 Anyone who oppresses the poor is insulting God who made them. To help the poor is to honor God.
Proverbs. 21:13 He who shuts his ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in his own time of need.
Proverbs 28:27 If you give to the poor, your needs will be supplied! But a curse upon those who close their eyes to poverty.
Proverbs 22:9 Happy is the generous man, the one who feeds the poor.
Leviticus. 19:18 Love your neighbor as yourself, for I am Jehovah.
Isaiah. 58:7 I want you to share your food with the hungry and bring right into your own homes those who are helpless, poor, and destitute. Clothe those who are cold, and don't hide from relatives who need your help.
Isaiah. 58:8 "If you do these things, God will shed his own glorious light upon you. He will heal you; your godliness will lead you forward, goodness will be a shield before you, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.
Isaiah. 58:10 "Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble! Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day.
Isaiah. 58:11 And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy you with all good things, and keep you healthy too; and you will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.
