Greenwich Academy students and faculty wrote more than 200 holiday notes to soldiers overseas. The packages were distributed to the 101st Airborne Division 3-187 Infantry Battalion serving in Iraq.

Younger Greenwich Academy students participated in the Lower School Mitten Tree. Mittens, scarves and hats that were brought to school decorate a tree until January, when some of the girls will wrap and deliver the items to the Port Chester Head Start & Therapeutic Nursery and the program at the Port Chester Children's Place. Part one of two A new kind of train arrived in Stamford on Oct. 5, 1907.

The slower, less reliable steam-powered train sets had been replaced with groundbreaking electric trains, capable of getting commuters and travelers on the New York, New Haven and Hartford rail line between New York City and Stamford in 50 minutes.

The train left Grand Central Terminal at 9:09 a.m. and arrived at Stamford at 10:29 a.m. That is arrived one minute late appeared to be the only reported problem.

'Everything worked lovely,' Hoge Gilliam, a railroad superintendent, told The Advocate at the time.

Interviews with passengers revealed the ride was smoother than a steam locomotive and spared them the distractions of soft coal smoke and cinders. They also marveled about how the electric train seemed to accelerate and decelerate so quickly.

By 12:18 p.m., the first train back to New York left the Stamford station with about 100 passengers. The train carried mainly summer vacationers with a few commuters from Stamford and Greenwich, The Advocate reported.

The electric service, which began along the New Haven Line a few months before the first Stamford train -- in New Rochelle, N.Y., that July and at Port Chester, N.Y., in August -- marked a landmark development for the region's railroad that helped bring ridership to peak levels. Only a few years later, the rise of the automobile and increasing mismanagement issues caused commuting numbers to plummet..........

CRIME FILE

The other Greenwich murder

Source: New York Daily News

Summer was in its Labor Day swoon, and eighth grade loomed just ahead for Matthew Margolies.

His footloose days were numbered, so he decided to spend Aug. 31, 1984 - Friday of the holiday weekend - pursuing his favorite hobby: angling.

The gangly 13-year-old was Greenwich, Conn.'s version of Huck Finn. He was rarely seen without a fishing pole, stalking chubby trout in the Byram River near his home on Pilgrim Drive, which traverses the border between Greenwich and Port Chester, N.Y.

Young Margolies lived with his mother, Maryann, and older sister in the blue-collar Pemberwick section of Greenwich, far from the broad lawns and mansions of Belle Haven.

Maryann Margolies worked as a nurse, and Matthew was a latchkey kid, splitting time between his own home and that of his maternal grandmother, who lived a few blocks away.
It had been a difficult year for Matthew.

His parents had split up, and he had become estranged from his father, who moved to Texas. His beloved grandfather and angling guru, George Miazga, had died earlier that month, leaving Matthew without a fishing buddy...........

Skydivers tackle Pond Swoop challenge

Source: Poughkeepsie Journal

From pizza man to miracle man.

That wouldn't be the bad title for a biography of skydiver Jeff (Jeffro) Provenzano.

Last weekend, the former Port Chester/current Arizona resident won the 11th annual Pond Swoop Nationals skydiving competition at The Blue Sky Ranch in Gardiner.

The victory was the fourth straight at Gardiner for Provenzano, who won $4,000, taking the straight lane, carving lane and freestyle/expression and overall championships.

Straight lane, carving lane skydiving?

At Gardiner, this means exiting a plane at 4,000 feet, deploying your canopy at about 3,000 feet and "slowing" to about 60 miles per hour. Then you drag a foot as far as you can through the water in a designated lane of a 250-foot-long pond, then land on the ground - points added for style.

Freestyle requires basically the same skills, with a tough trick thrown in.
Provenzano's trick was the "miracle man" in which he did a complete 360, landing with his canopy lines twisted.

"People are doing things that five years ago were never dreamed of," said Gardiner resident Kamuran Bayrasli, a competitor who owns the Ranch's pro shop..........

Bastianich/Batali to come to Port Chester?

By JSexton

Here's the latest. Check out EATER at http://www.westchestermagazine.com/

Cheese Boy replies....

I knew they had their eyes on that space. Many years ago, the Tarry Lodge served me up some of the best fried calamari I ever had in the county. Their quality slowly faded, unfortunately. I'm also reminded of the old Amerigo's on the county line in Byrum just up the street. Another nice memory. If Batali and Bastianich acquire that space, I hope it becomes an eatery, and not a wine shop. We'll have to just wait and see.

Pro golf tour returns to Concord this week

By GAVIN FARETRA

Monitor staff

When Meaghan Francella double-bogeyed the treacherous par-5, 16th hole at Beaver Meadow Golf Course in last year's Duramed Futures Tour event, the Port Chester, N.Y., native was distraught.

She had just thrown away a great chance to win the event - eventually tying for second - and with only four tournaments to play, was unsure whether or not she'd get one of the five coveted exemptions to play on the LPGA Tour in 2007.

Although angry, Francella remained undeterred and went on to finish in no worse than 16th place over the final four events, earning her tour card for the current LPGA season.

A great catch Fishermen keep an eye out for bluefish

By Michael Dinan

Roger Cortello, 73, a retired chef from southern France, stretched his legs from a cooler set on Steamboat Road's stone pier yesterday afternoon and peered toward the spot where his fishing line disappeared into the gray Long Island Sound.

'I enjoy fishing, and I have nothing to do after breakfast and lunch. So far I've caught one bluefish,' said Cortello, a Utah resident who comes to Greenwich for six weeks each summer to cook for a wealthy woman that lives here. 'Maybe I cook it for her. Maybe not. THE WINNER IS?

UNKNOWN LEE TAKES WORLD MATCH PLAY

The tournament directors at the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship invited the "Who's Who" of women's golf.

Instead, they wound up with the "Who? Who?" of the sport.

With nine of the top 10 players being knocked out before the third round, yesterday's final featured 22nd-seeded Seon Hwa Lee and No. 12 Ai Miyazato - not exactly household names.
Lee, who despite lacking star power, is quickly becoming one of the top players on the tour, captured her second LPGA title yesterday, beating Miyazato, 2 and 1.

The South Korean Lee is one of the best young players in the world, as is the Japanese Miyazato, Though they are celebrities in their native countries, that is not the case here. It was evidenced by the paltry amount of people who actually attended the finale at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle.

Such was the state of the tournament and to a greater extent, the LPGA itself, which has a handful of players who can draw a crowd. And virtually all of those players were gone by the end of the second round.

Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis were gone by Friday and Michelle Wie turned down an exemption to play in the tournament, leaving Port Chester's Meaghan Francella to keep people interested. When her run ended after the quarterfinals on Saturday, so did much interest in the event.......

Junior golfer Alessandra Kutz of Sanford shot an even-par 72 Saturday in the first round at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens. Kutz, competing in the girls 12-13 age division, enters round two of the three-day tournament tied for second. Kutz is entering seventh grade at Rock Lake Middle School. Leading the tournament is Thailand's Moriya Jutanugarn, who went 4 under to take a four-stroke lead. Kutz is tied for second with Briana Mao of Folsom, Calif.....

......"This week has been really, really good off the tee," Hjorth said. "I guess I'm considered as a long hitter, so that sometimes can be a bit of a help. I think also being able to have spin on the ball on these greens, because they're starting to firm up a lot and be really quick, is a big advantage, too.

"With wind gusts again making club selection difficult on the hilly course, the 33rd-seeded Francella, from nearby Port Chester, fell to Hjorth after beating No. 1 Lorena Ochoa 1-up Friday and topping Pat Hurst 2 and 1 Saturday morning.

The large gallery that followed Meaghan Francella throughout her four rounds at the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship was left disappointed yesterday, but the crowd was perhaps not as disappointed as the tournament officials.

Francella, a Port Chester native, was eliminated in the quarterfinals, 4 and 3, by No. 40-seed Maria Hjorth, leaving the tournament with no major draws as it heads into its last day.

NEW ROCHELLE - Last year the HSBC Women's World Match Play's final four were Lorena Ochoa, Juli Inkster, Paula Creamer and eventual champ Brittany Lincicome.

How many of HSBC's dollars do you think the title sponsor would pay to have any one of those players at Wykagyl for its final four today?

Never mind that. How many of HSBC's executives (or CBS-TV's) would volunteer to pick up Meaghan Francella in Port Chester and carry her and her gallery of friends, family, neighbors and former classmates - "people I haven't seen in years," Francella said - to New Rochelle today?

NEW ROCHELLE - At the very end, when she was all out of frustration, Meaghan Francella could only manage a bemused smile. The Port Chester native had a ball in the rough, a stance in the bunker, and no realistic chance of knocking her ball close. In other words, she had her quarterfinal round in the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship summed up perfectly.

GOLF ROUNDUP

Francella tops Ochoa in Match Play

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Meaghan Francella aimed high.

Facing a blind second shot on the par-5 18th, the local favorite hit a near-perfect 3-wood into the middle of the green to finish off top-ranked Lorena Ochoa on Friday in the second round of the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship.

"I just picked out a cloud," Francella said. "I didn't know where it went and then I heard the claps and I figured, 'OK, we're at the front.' And then I got there and I'm like, 'Unbelievable, 30 feet for eagle.' "

Francella, an LPGA Tour rookie from nearby Port Chester, N.Y., thrilled her large, vocal gallery with the 1-up victory over Ochoa, the Mexican star who won the 2006 Sybase Classic on the Wykagyl Country Club course.

"The whole day was pretty stressful to be honest with you," Francella said. "I just tried to stay patient and hit one shot at a time."

In March in Mexico, Francella beat Annika Sorenstam -- then the No. 1 player -- on the fourth hole of a playoff to win the MasterCard Classic for her first tour title.

Stars Fall in Women's World Match Play

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Paula Creamer lingered on the 18th green to take one more look at her putting line. Still trying to figure out how her 10-foot birdie try failed to break to the left, she shook her head and punched the air in disgust.

Annika Sorenstam headed straight for the practice green, dazed by a tricky downhill birdie putt on No. 15 that rolled some 30 yards off the front of the green.

Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa looked at the bright side after her second-round loss Friday in the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship.

"I'm going to try not to think too much," Ochoa said. "I'll try to be positive and relax the next couple of days and get ready for the next few tournaments."

No. 5 Se Ri Pak and No. 7 Suzann Pettersen also dropped out Friday, leaving No. 10 Mi Hyun Kim as the top seed in the final 16.

"Seeds don't matter in this," said Meaghan Francella, the local favorite who knocked off Ochoa 1-up. "It's just how you're seeded in the beginning. I just went out there and played golf."
