Romney's statement on faith applauded

The need for Mitt Romney to have to defend his religious beliefs is caused by the bane of this country, namely politics. It is deplorable that - not for the first time - religion has been drawn into the political arena. If one adds the results of a poll that reportedly showed that more than 30 percent of those participating had voiced that they would "not vote for a Mormon," it becomes evident that we have not quite yet achieved the level of civility and maturity our Constitution aims at. Ours is apparently not yet the model democracy our politicians like to tell us and the world.

Mr. Romney's response was exemplary, as was the one given by John F. Kennedy almost 50 years ago. The Constitution speaks of "freedom of" not "freedom from" religion. One regrets that the media did not choose an educational role but rather its usual confrontational style. Or is there an attempt to profile Mr. Romney due to him being a Republican?

Further, these two rarely interact with the hispanic community of Port Chester. There main interaction with the hispanic community is to exploit the poor hispanic woman that cleans the Americana Latina offices at 38 Broad Street. (We are currently withholding the poor hispanic woman's name, because she appears to be a victim of criminal activity and not a public figure like Richard and Jananne Abel)

Richard And Jananne Abel sure do save a lot of money by not paying for this this poor hispanic woman's disability insurance, social security insurance and unemployment insurance.

Determining what is an acceptable identification document, including cards issued by foreign consulates, is one of an assortment of new challenges facing local police, says a report from the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Like many other questions relating to immigrants, there is no consensus on whether the consular IDs should be considered valid......

Are immigration offenses criminal or civil violations?

Not every immigration violation is a crime. Some violations are civil, not criminal, in nature. Civil violations include being in the United States without authorization and overstaying a visa. Criminal violations include re-entering the United States illegally, alien smuggling and willfully disobeying a deportation order.

Can local police enforce immigration violations?

There is no consensus among legal experts on the role that state and local law enforcement should perform in immigration enforcement. Some maintain that state and local officers need specific authorization by Congress to enforce the criminal immigration laws; others believe they may have an inherent right to do so, depending on local laws.Congress has given specific authorization to local law enforcement in certain areas: arresting previously deported felons and noncitizens who have committed the federal crime of re-entry; making arrests for smuggling, transporting or harboring criminal aliens; enforcing immigration laws during "an actual or imminent influx of aliens"; and enforcing immigration laws under special agreements that involve training and supervision by federal officers.Can local police question criminal suspects about their immigration status?The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that during a legitimate detention, officers may inquire about the detainee's immigration status.

2 more candidates join Rye town supervisor race

STORY

At least two new candidates have emerged to challenge Town Supervisor Robert Morabito in the Nov. 6 election, including the man at the center of the federal voting rights lawsuit against Port Chester.

Besides Democrat Morabito and Republican Joseph Carvin, who announced their candidacies earlier, nominating petitions were filed last week with the county Board of Elections by Salverio Terenzi for the Conservative line and Cesar Ruiz for the Independence line.

A fifth candidate, Marcos Perez, filed a petition to run on the Working Families line, but later declined the nomination.....

...When contacted by telephone Perez, a friend of Ruiz's, said he was on the petition "because Cesar put me there." He said he did not have time to be town supervisor because he had a new job installing carpet that kept him too busy.

Ruiz also declined to comment for now on his reason for backing Perez and a slate of Working Families candidates.

In the race for two seats on the Rye Town Board, Jose Nieves and Ximena Alarcon are seeking the Independence line along with Ruiz. Arriving at a "seventh wonder" is not an easy task. There is simply too much weirdness out there.

Readers were challenged to come up with their own favorite oddities to assist in the completion of my list of six parochial wonders (see my July 10 column) and they did not disappoint. More than 30 suggestions were sent in. Some were easily discarded but most were quite good.....

Hello, and welcome to the land of PC Politics!

Let me tell you... I am the last person who ever thought I would run for public office here in Port Chester. I was happily enmeshed in my own life, raising two terrific children, enjoying my wonderful husband, being involved in the schools, having good friends, and enjoying being a stay-at-home mom. Maybe it was because I am a stay-at-home mom that I was beginning to see more and more things that were happening in our Village that I didn't like.

I saw that our Village is overcrowded. I saw that our schools and infrastructure simply cannot support our growing population. I saw that Port Chester has one of the higest tax rates in the county, and that we have suffered 50% tax increases. I saw that one or two companies that own most of the apartment buildings in our Village, effectively controlling the housing market. I saw that these landlords (slumlords, really...) allow their apartment buildings to be chopped up into numerous illegal apartments. I saw that our Building Department turns a blind eye towards these illegal, terrible apartments. I saw instances where 5 mailboxes are attached to one two-family house.

Let me be perfectly clear about this: I do not hate immigrants nor their presence in Port Chester. On the contrary, I welcome them. This Village was founded by immigrants - it's lifeblood is our immigrant community. But, I saw them cramming into small, dark, unsafe apartments that are hardly cheap in terms of rental rates... and nothing was being done to address it. Everyone deserves a safe place to live.

I saw that certain officials are simply not requiring certain individuals to uphold certain laws. I saw major breeches in code enforcement. I saw that an "old boy network" runs our Village government, and has for years. I saw that if you are rich in this town, and have "friends in high places," you can pull special favors.

I finally got to the point where I was tired of seeing things I didn't like, and tired of complaining. I decided that I had a choice: be part of the problem or be part of the solution. Of course, I chose to be part of the solution. I took action. I switched my party registration from Republican to Democratic. Locally, I found myself much more aligned with the CHANGE I saw coming from the Port Chester Democratic Party than the STATUS QUO being preached by the local Republicans. I asked the powers-that-be if I could be considered as a candidate to run in the upcoming March election. I interviewed with the PC Democratic Nominating Committee (Dan Brakewood, Gary Stracuzzi and Raymond Sculky). Party Chairman Gary Stracuzzi asked me this:

"What makes you a good candidate for Trustee in our Village?"

My answer was and is simple:

I am not indebted to anyone. Noone is indebted to me. I do not need a new driveway, an addition on my house, a job for my cousin Vinny, or extra money in my pocket that has not been legally earned. I am for our Village, Port Chester. I love this Village. My husband Dave and I have been here for generations. Dave's grandmother's grandmother had a house on Willow Street. My Mom's family grew up on the South Side of Town. There are lots of Port Chester High School graduates in my family, inlcuding me and Dave. I care deeply about Port Chester, and am committed to helping to make it a great place for my kids to live. I am for our Village. My Village needs people like me.

This is not a pitch - it's something I really mean. I am tired of hearing people complain but do nothing to change things. It's time for me to do my part and try to make a difference. I've put my name in the hat to run for office, and the window should be open to me. The Democratic Party caucus is coming up on January 30th. I hope you'll help me spread the word. It's at T&J's at 7pm (come early) and food will be served. Help approve my nomination! Help me kick off my campaign!

In March of 2003, I was honored to be selected as the Project Manager along with Content and Layout Management of the new www.NYSCA.com web site. Additionally, I was instrumental in developing and updating the membership database that is part of the new web site.
From May 15, 1998 to November 11, 2001, I have been the “Overall-In-Charge” for The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) Part IV practical exam at the New York downstate site. The Part IV Overall-In-Charge is the primary policy link to the NBCE. The most important element of this position requires that the national examination and the standardization of all administrative processes be followed. The “Overall-In-Charge” ensures that all facilities and personnel are prepared and properly trained to NBCE specifications. In addition, performs a coordinating role with the Chief Examiner, Test Site Administrator, assists in Standardize Patient Training, and handles all issues of contention among these individuals that may arise during the examination.
This examination is designed to measure the clinical competency of chiropractors that are pursuing first-time state licensure, or chiropractors that have a valid state license, but are seeking licensure in one of 45 plus states that accept the Part IV practical exam as their final examination before obtaining a chiropractic license to practice.
I have assisted with Standardize Patient Training in 1997 and 1998. Additionally, I was an Assistant Chief Examiner in 1996 and 1997. The Assistant Chief Examiner is responsible for organizing the examiners, and assists in administering the exam at the New York downstate and upstate sites.

I have completed Post Doctoral education and training and certified by the Independent Chiropractic Examiners Society, Inc. (ICESTM). ICESTM is a not-for-profit educational corporation. The Society was organized to develop and maintain the maximum level of competence and ethical standards among Doctors of Chiropractic, who perform outcome assessment examinations, mediate insurance claims and provide expert court testimony. Before acceptance as an ICESTM member, all candidates must have been in full time practice for a minimum of eight years, complete and pass a V Module course curriculum and are subject to primary source verification, and require annual re-certification.
The purpose of ICESTM is to establish an authoritative body, which would oversee the independent professional examination process, which insures the uniform and equitable interests for the protection of the public. Additionally, ICESTM conducts, sponsors and provides pertinent mandatory educational seminars, as well as institutes a public access forum protocol for filing a complaint.
Additionally, I have successfully completed a course in Chiropractic Managed Care and Utilization Review and Chiropractic Industrial Consulting, which includes pre-employment examination and evaluation of industrial workstations and there affect on employees. I also satisfactorily completed coursework in Impairment Rating for Disability Evaluation of Musculoskeletal and Nervous System.
