One early August morning, three insane girls were joking around about their favorite movie, Zodiac, based on the serial killer of the 1960's in the Bay Area. Ashley and Melissa dubbed Zalex, whom had just come back from San Francisco the Zodiac killer. They decided to make a mini remake of the movie for fun. The next day, Zalex put it onto her iMacala, edited it, put in the outtakes, and posted it onto Youtube.

OBITUARY

ANDREW JOHN LASKA - 42 died Friday, August 10, 2007 at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital of congestive heart failure.He was born November 10, 1964 in United Hospital in Port Chester, NY to Jennie Laska and the late Frank M. Laska.

Andrew attended Glenville School and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1982.
He was a HAM radio operator and enjoyed building and flying radio controlled model airplanes, fishing, gardening and cooking. He is survived by his mother Jennie, brothers Frank (Margaret) and Stephan.

Friends may call from 2-4PM and 7-9PM on Monday, August 13, 2007 at the Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Avenue, Greenwich, CT where services will be held 10AM on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Port Chester, Rye, Rye Brook Emergency Medical Service or a charity of choice.

EDITORIAL

IIT IS TORTURE. Driving Interstate 95 in Connecticut, the main east-west highway in the state, is absolutely painful.

Each trip exacts a mental and physical toll on a vehicles' driver and passengers.

Forget Guantanamo, if the government wants to coerce secrets from suspected terrorists, all it needs to do is put them in a mini-van and force them to make repeated trips up and down the interstate.

I've done it twice this summer, traversing back and forth nearly the entire 111.6-mile stretch from the Rhode Island border to Port Chester, the start of toll heaven and the New York Thruway.

Just because you've passed from the Nutmeg to Empire state doesn't make the drive any more tolerable, it only means more congestion and annoying, traffic-stopping tolls.

Bumper-to-bumper traffic is frustrating enough, but the stops at toll booths clog it even more and make it nauseating as you roll down your window to pay the toll and fumes billow in.......

She is what I like to call my blonde-haired, blue-eyed, white girl twin.We were very much the same in a whole lot of ways except for the obvious ones.

So this is me and my Berooni together at her daughter's Sweet 16 last year in North Carolina:

I hate this picture of me, but Bobbie looks good.We both were built the same way back in high school... thin but with big asses and hips. So swapping clothes wasn't a problem.

We were so close I even started to take on her cute little lisp.We started to sound so much like each other that I even broke up with a few of her boyfriends over the phone FOR her....

Anyway, a decade or so ago she got married and was carted away to North Carolina. I hate that she's there.I miss her somethin' wicked... and every now and again I try to convince her to come back.

We were headed elsewhere in the area last night, but noticing Patrias was open, after Adamclyde's scary info, decided to see what was going on. We were two couples and we shared eight tapas plates. Quality seemed as high in general -- major difference noted was more garlic in oil served for bread dipping and in gambas al ajillo, not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned.

Pantanal, however, IS closed. There is a sign indicating another churrasqueria(sp?) is coming to the same spot. (Not for a while, though, given the conditiopn of the space.)

Rosa Orlana looked into her clean, canvas grocery bag yesterday afternoon and predicted her dinner menu.

"The squash. We'll make something with a cream sauce and some meat," the Port Chester woman said, using better English than a reporter's Spanish as she paused to answer questions. "And rice. We'll have it with rice."

More than 100 low-income families were planning their meals yesterday, loaded up with farm-fresh vegetables harvested and handed out by a coalition of church groups, hospitals and community organizations trying to ease food shortages for those in need.

Ann Barringer Spaeth, executive director of the Council of Community Services, worked her Spanish language skills.......

The food comes from a 12-acre farm in Goshen, the proceeds of a 2-acre parcel that the coalition rents and works with tireless volunteers like Rana Nutka.

"She's up at the farm two days a week and harvesting on Saturdays," Spaeth said.

The Rev. Hilario Albert served as the host, with long tables set up across the shaded side yard of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where he serves the community.

Albert had set aside three heads of cabbage for the neighborhood dinner the church runs on Sundays and decided the guests could get along with less than that when a last-minute customer arrived to find little food left.

"Nobody should go to bed without food," Albert said. "It doesn't matter what color a person is, their nationality or anything else. We can spare one and live on what's left."

........Evelyn Batres, a registered nurse from Port Chester, loves her 23-year-old baby sitter, who has been part of her family for more than two years. Batres, who works the night shift, has the young woman come by five days a week at $8 an hour to watch her 2-year-old daughter, Celeste, so she can get a few hours of sleep.


"She's trustworthy," Batres said. "I see her interact with Celeste, and she makes the right choices. She follows the household rules."


Celeste had a few words of praise for her sitter, too.


"I like when she takes me to the park," the dark-haired little girl said. "I play on the swings and it's nice."

Developer James Heffernan will put up 38 condominiums in seven buildings on 1.3 acres on Liberty Street. He also is working on 11 townhomes on Olivia Street in Port Chester, N.Y.

Heffernan, who grew up in Rye, N.Y., has been involved in building ownership, leasing and property management throughout his working life, primarily in New York City.".........

Unlike other minority groups whose numbers are booming across the Lower Hudson Valley, the black population in Westchester and Rockland counties has remained almost constant or dipped slightly since the 2000 Census, new government figures show.

But in Putnam, the state's fifth-fastest-growing county, blacks increased their numbers almost 70 percent during the same time.

"Probably they are coming to the county for the same reasons I did: the quietness of the area and the quality of the schools," said Joy Hopkins, who on Monday opened the Lady of Color hair salon in Brewster........

........In Mamaroneck, the growing Hispanic population can be found in the grocery stores, beauty salons and restaurants that cater to immigrants in the village's business district. About 10 years ago, residents created the Hispanic Resource Center to help newcomers adjust to the community.

"We foster integration. We want them to learn English, learn American culture and assimilate," said Mariana Boneo, the center's executive director. "But you can't expect people to leave their culture behind. You want them to bring their culture. It adds to the richness of the areas."
The influx also has caused controversy, and a federal case that last year found village police officers discriminated against Hispanic day laborers - prompting the creation of a local hiring site - continues to divide the community.

Travolta, a bigger star than ever

STORY:

While Robin Williams and Kelly Preston were inside Gaia yesterday filming a scene, Carla Orlando stood on the sidewalk hoping for a sighting of one of her favorite actors, John Travolta.

Her camera at the ready, Orlando, 47, of Greenwich, said she first saw Travolta in the movie "Grease" as a teenager growing up in Italy.

"I love John Travolta," she said. "He is a wonderful actor at everything from drama to comedy."

Residents and downtown workers, some curious and others starstruck, staked out Gaia throughout the earlier part of the day hoping to catch a glimpse of Williams, Preston, or Travolta, during the first of two days of shooting for a new comedy called "Old Dogs.".........

HEADLINE:

TELL MAYOR THAT IT IS TIME TO START USING FINES TO COVER THE COSTS OF HAVING CUSAMANO, DIDDEN AND GIANFRANCESCO INVOLVED IN PORT CHESTER GOVERNMENT.

STORY:

Soon the residents of Port Chester will hopefully get the oportunity to speak at a public hearing about increasing and adding new fines in the village of Port Chester.

The village staff and the Mayor are correct when they say parking fines have not been updated often enough. It is an excelent idea to try and have the fines at least cover the cost of enforcement.

Most of the fines will go up about $5.00 a ticket.

There is also talk of a much more increasing downtown parking meters by 25 cents. This is a 50% increase over the current 50 price.

These minor changes are fiscally responsible and should help the village balance its budget.

But why should the Village stop at Parking meters.

Let's recoup all of our lost costs.

Maybe we could fine Port Chester Building Inspector Lenny Cusamano $250 for each week that he fails to shut down an illegal apartment in Port Chester.

Or, maybe we could fine Port Chester Planning Board Member Bart Didden $500 a day for everyday he occupies his Main Street offices without a certificate of occupancy.

Or better yet, maybe we could fine Port Chester Developement Consultant Gary Gianfranseco $5,000 everytime he files a change order on that bottemless money pit known as Horton School.

God Knows, Gary can easily afford it, because he has already stuffed over a million of your tax dollars in his pockets while being involved on this project.

Considering how many events were weighing upon the Grateful Dead at the time, speculation might lead many to believe that the concert’s selection was tied to its historical significance. For starters, Mickey Hart was in the midst of a complete breakdown. After performing on the previous night, he took an enormous amount of medication to ease his mind, which caused him to fall asleep for three days. He subsequently retreated to his California ranch, leaving Bill Kreutzmann as the group’s lone drummer until October 1974. As the music contained on Three from the Vault demonstrates quite clearly, Kreutzmann slipped admirably into the role, and the result was a leaner, meaner outfit.

The village and property owners will share the cost of repairs to shabby sidewalks under a revived and revamped sidewalk improvement program.

The Port Chester Board of Trustees recently approved borrowing $400,000 to reinstate its "Good Neighbor Sidewalk Program," which was discontinued during the 2005-06 budget year due to shoddy repairs and delinquent payments by property owners.

The new program will target areas of the village that are not considered low- to moderate-income neighborhoods, which are eligible for federal Community Block Grant money for sidewalk work, Mayor Dennis Pilla said.......

Port Chester to hire own lawyers in eminent-domain case

STORY:

The village is looking to hire its own lawyers to fight the long-standing eminent-domain lawsuit against businessman William Brody.

The Board of Trustees is expected to hold a special vote later this week to hire the White Plains law firm Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker as special counsel in the suit. That vote had been scheduled for Monday, but was postponed after the board failed to gather a quorum.

The seven-year suit has so far cost the village $197,000. It had been sharing lawyers and legal fees with G&S Investors, the developer of the massive shopping and entertainment complex that swallowed Brody's downtown property........
