10/26/07 - Stupidvisor Wanna Be Joe "The Harvard Educated Fool" Carvin Is Acting Like A Cry Baby In The We$tmore $nooze

10/26/07 - Study: Immigrants' ties to home bind, but Latin Americans mostly shift lives to U.S.

STORY:
Along with running a Colombian restaurant, he sells long-distance telephone cards at $5 apiece. Other Main Street merchants sell plane tickets, money orders and shipping services. Their customers are people like Floridalma Tobar, a fast-food worker who calls Guatemala four or five times a week. She calls to check on the two daughters she and her husband are working to support.
But Gutierrez says his life, unlike that of his customers, is firmly transplanted in the United States. He emigrated from Colombia 20 years ago to escape the political violence that killed his father and uprooted his family. He has no desire to go back.
"I have my job here. I have my family here," he said. "You see the news every day, the big problems in my country. That's the reason I don't want to go."
A new study tries to measure such variations in the degree to which Latino immigrants maintain ties to their home country. Researchers have long paid attention to "transnational" migration - the efforts to live in two countries at once, rather than leave the old country behind. But it's been unclear how common the phenomenon is.

10/26/07 - 'Just Me Again'

Sage, a self-taught pianist, was writing songs at age 4. She was accepted into Manhattan's prestigious School of American Ballet while in junior high school. An accomplished painter, she received a drama degree from Stanford University in California.
"Diversity is good," Sage said while calling from her Manhattan apartment. "It's really great to be able to do a number of things well. But it became apparent that it would be best for me to harness my drive into one endeavor. I found that if I didn't focus on one thing, I would never build any momentum for myself."
Sage decided to go with music in 1995, and the move paid quick dividends. Two years later, she landed a coveted spot on the Lilith Fair tour after winning a New York talent contest.....

10/24/07 - Arlene Thorne from Port Chester says, "The health system doesn't work. There's nothing more to say about it.''

Americans, by a more than 2-to-1 margin, say Democratic presidential candidates have better overall solutions to health- care questions than do Republicans, according to a new Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll.
Presidential candidates of both parties have placed the issue at the top of their agendas amid growing voter concern about health costs -- rising at about double the annual rate of wages -- and the 47 million people who lack insurance.

10/23/07 - Village of Mamaroneck Wants To Be More Like Port Chester

Village of Mamaroneck replaces legal team in Jewish school case.
MAMARONECK - After losing a federal appeal last week in a case against an Orthodox Jewish School, the village said yesterday that it is consulting with a new law firm on how to proceed.
"We approach every case with the intention of winning and that doesn't always happen," Mayor Phil Trifiletti said. "This was a very complicated case."
Last week, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court decision that the village zoning board violated a land-use law against religious discrimination in turning down the Westchester Day School's expansion project. Trifiletti said law firm Thacher Proffitt and Wood would no longer handle the case....
... The board adopted a resolution yesterday 5-0 creating a staff attorney position.
"It's time to fix a wheel that's been broken for a very long time," Trustee Toni Pergola Ryan said.
A salary has not been set for the position, but Murphy said a safe estimate would be$160,000. The figure was based on what Port Chester, a neighboring village with a similar makeup to Mamaroneck, pays its attorney. Murphy added the attorney could also require ...

Yet the Banking Department said it found USA Bank was operating with poor management oversight, a poorly qualified staff and inadequate audit processes. Other problems cited by regulators included the lack of a comprehensive strategic plan and budget; inadequate training programs for the board, management and staff; insufficient information technology procedures; and inadequate policies to meet federal information security standards...

10/22/07 Chow Hound Review - Glorious Goat at a Port Chester Taqueria

Goatiness sings out loud and clear in big pieces of tender, long-cooked meat. Chopped onion and cilantro and thick, fiery salsa verde complete this superb authentic taco. Carnitas, though not as good, is also worth a try—richly flavorful, if not as moist and succulent as it could be.

10/21/07 - Obituary - Singer Teresa Brewer

Ms. Brewer was a veteran radio performer at 19, when "Music! Music! Music!" became a pop-chart smash in 1950 with its bouncy Dixieland-ensemble backup and command to "put another nickel in, in the nickelodeon."
Her voice was startlingly brassy for a 5-foot-2, 100-pound singer, and the disparity prompted jokes. Referring to a brash nightclub performer, entertainer Bing Crosby joked that Ms. Brewer was the "Sophie Tucker of the Girl Scouts." Time magazine called Ms. Brewer "a topnotch singer with a voice somewhere between a blowtorch and a cello."
Her first marriage, to William Monahan, ended in divorce. Thiele, whom she married in 1972, died in 1996.
Survivors include four children from her first marriage, Kathleen Monahan-Granzen of Rye Brook, N.Y., Susan M. Dorot of White Plains, N.Y., Megan Ahearn of Port Chester, N.Y., and Michelle McCann of New Rochelle; a stepson, Bob Thiele Jr. of California; a brother; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
