THE JOURNAL NEWS REPORTS IN PORT CHESTER
The fire that destroyed a three-story building on Midland Avenue was caused by an electrical malfunction and fed by natural gas, the fire chief said Wednesday.
Fire Chief Kevin McFadden said firefighters worked throughout the night after the fire broke out at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, and managed to contain the flames to 304 Midland Ave. The job was made more difficult because of natural gas escaping from one side of the building before Consolidated Edison cut off service.
"This is probably one of the greatest, tremendous efforts the department's done — tremendous aid, given the potential," McFadden said. "Had we had a windy day, we probably would have lost five structures."
The surrounding buildings, separated by only a foot or two, had heavy damage from smoke and water.
Firefighters soaked the neighboring homes to help save them.
The commercial and residential structure at 304 Midland has been demolished, and cleanup efforts kept Midland Avenue closed for most of the day Wednesday. McFadden said the demolition took place overnight with authorization from the owner, who was on a cruise and had to be reached by his attorney.
