Hospital's problems start at the top

Dear Journal News Editor:

It is obvious that the Sound Shore Medical Center has been suffering for several years now. If you have been a patient there or have talked to someone who has, you would know that the hospital service and care has declined, and the shortage of nurses in this country doesn't help.

Money always seems to be the issue, and the employees at the bottom of the totem pole always suffer. Maybe they should think about the top for a change. Many years ago, when the hospital started to suffer, it was the administration that was revamped, and the hospital recovered.

There are many hospitals that treat nonpaying patients, and this is a poor excuse for a lack of funds.

I would wonder where the real problems are when the administration draws a salary that is more than the president of the United States.

Romney's statement on faith applauded

The need for Mitt Romney to have to defend his religious beliefs is caused by the bane of this country, namely politics. It is deplorable that - not for the first time - religion has been drawn into the political arena. If one adds the results of a poll that reportedly showed that more than 30 percent of those participating had voiced that they would "not vote for a Mormon," it becomes evident that we have not quite yet achieved the level of civility and maturity our Constitution aims at. Ours is apparently not yet the model democracy our politicians like to tell us and the world.

Mr. Romney's response was exemplary, as was the one given by John F. Kennedy almost 50 years ago. The Constitution speaks of "freedom of" not "freedom from" religion. One regrets that the media did not choose an educational role but rather its usual confrontational style. Or is there an attempt to profile Mr. Romney due to him being a Republican?

Find middle ground on sex education

“A veteran is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to The United States of America for an amount of up to and including their life.”

When will our schools get sex education right? I am referring to the article about an Irvington Middle School boy who told his parents, 'Today at school I learned that oral sex is safer than anal sex.' I also saw a TV special on a middle school in Maine that sells birth control and condoms to children as young as 11.

Maybe it is just me, but selling birth control and other forms of contraception is giving children incentive to engage in sexual activity. Don't get me wrong. I believe every person has a choice, but an 11-year-old probably cannot make the right choice when it comes to sex. At that age, a child's body is not even fully developed and will continue to change for years to come. The right approach to sex ed lies somewhere between abstinence and the handing out of contraception

By now it is fairly obvious that the abstinence-only approach isn't working; however, we do not need to promote sex. The amount of information that we throw on our kids should be done in school and at home gradually. Kids at 11 do not know the same amount as an 18-year-old. We do not need to rush them into premature sexual activity. I believe children should be aware of the different types of contraception, but should not bring it home from school and at no point should they be encouraged to engage in one type of sex over the other.

Forget Gotti, pursue illegal immigrants

When are the feds going to realize they just don't have what they need and what it takes to convict John Gotti Jr.? They have spent millions of dollars trying to make a case that they just can't make. Haven't they embarrassed themselves enough?

Could you imagine what good they could do if they took all that money and effort and went after the real criminals. We have over 12 million illegals in this country who have robbed us of billions of dollars in taxes and we're chasing a guy who owes $140,000. Gotti made an agreement to make restitution by mid-November and has dealt directly with the IRS as was the agreement. Last I checked, we are still in September. Our government needs to get their priorities straight and focus on some real issues. When are we going to realize that it is not the Mob that is ruining the fabric of our society but in fact it is the millions of illegals that are slowly killing all of us hard-working tax-paying Americans.

Speed bikers pose danger on roadways

On any given day, whether it be Interstates 95, 287, 87 or the parkways, you can be sure you'll see a highway or byway nemesis called the speed bike. The operators (98 percent of them) have very little common sense; whatever they do have between their ears is out to lunch.
There's just too many of these speed bikers on the loose, addicted to speeding and reckless driving habits........

.......I really do hope that local, state and county law enforcement take notice of this serious problem before some very serious accidents occur. And also take note that many of us on the road who take safety seriously are absolutely fed up with these irresponsible motorcyclists who perpetuate the possibility of very serious injury to anyone in their path.

Dear Editor of the NY Post,

It was really dumb that you posted pictures and rated the bridges of New York.

I know that it was done in light of what happened out in Minneapolis, and we all sympathize with them.

And while I'm sure that millions of commuters who use any of the bridges are very curious as to how our bridges are holding up, we should not make those details public and broadcast it like it's celebrity gossip on Page Six.

'Being green' just up to little guy?

"Don't make left turns." This is what my wife called me at work about after reading an article on saving fuel and becoming more "green." I wondered then, "How will I make it home?"

With the planet seemingly on the brink of collapse from global warming, I can only hope that some day we will end our reliance on gasoline, and have "clean"-burning fuels instead.......

....It would be refreshing to hear the CEOs of fossil fuel-producing companies, and even the president of the U.S., announce that cleaner, more environmentally friendly fuels are on the way- and soon! Then I can go back to making left turns and finally make it home.
