By Nathan Mayberg and Jananne Abel

Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla, a Democrat, won a landslide victory over his challenger, Republican and Independence Party-endorsed candidate Bart Didden Tuesday. According to unofficial results provided by the village, Pilla gained a third term as mayor by garnering 1,595 votes, or approximately 59.4% of the 2,689 votes cast. Didden earned 1,094 votes, or 40.6%, a figure that included absentee ballots....

....As the results started coming in and the restaurant filled up, the mood became more festive. Winning District 18 by 58 votes was a good sign.

Dennis Pilla has won a third term as Port Chester's mayor, according to unofficial election results.

"This vote is about the belief that the people in Port Chester have about our future and about how positive and hopeful it is," Pilla told an elated crowd at Chavin Restaurant on Main Street.

Pilla built a steady lead as vote tallies came in from districts across Port Chester. Fellow Democrat and Trustee Dan Brakewood kept the crowded restaurant updated, leaning over his laptop before shouting out results: "Dennis just won 18!"

Pilla built a lead of almost 400 votes before the margin became insurmountable for his Republican opponent, Bart Didden.

All results are unofficial until the Board of Trustees certifies the victory at a special meeting on Thursday. However, unofficial results show Pilla took the election by nearly a 500-vote margin, with 1,564 votes to Didden's 1,076........

Port Chester Roundup's initial analysis of preliminary unofficial district by district election results shows that there was at least one close district race.

In Bart "The Bigot" Didden's home district Port Chester's infamous racist won by only two votes.

That means that if Bart and his wife wouldn't have voted Mayor Dennis Pilla would have tied the USA Central Station Alarm company owner who repeatedly told everyone in town that he was going to spend $80,000 to become the next mayor of Port Chester.

It's amazing just how much money Extremist TEA Party Lunatic Bart "The Bigot" Didden flushed down the toilet. At Least Port Chester Republican Chairman Billy Villanova Was Pretty Darn Smart Not To Spend A Damn Dime On Port Chester's Infamous Racist.

'Don't Borrow Trouble' is the theme of a campaign started yesterday in Westchester County to alert consumers to the dangers of subprime mortgages.

The subprime market provides loans for homebuyers who have less than perfect credit. The mortgages usually have adjustable interest rates, and the rates have been resetting this year to levels that are onerous for many borrowers.

09/29/07 - Port Chester Republican’s Do Not Support Supervisor Wanna Be

Port Chester Republican’s Do Not Support Supervisor Wanna Be Joe Carvin

In 2004, Joe Carvin applied to be the Port Chester Village Manager who would replace Richard “Fritz” Falanka. Joe Carvin should have been able to scoop up the job with ease.

Carvin was a Republican and Republican Mayor Gerald Logan and Six other Republican Trustees governed Port Chester. Also, Carvin was active in local politics and had strong political connections with all of the Republican Movers And Shakers. The other candidates lacked such strong connectons.

Carvin has a Harvard Degree in Public Administration and the other job candidates did not have the same prestigious degree. Plus, Carvin lived less than a mile from Port Chester and would be easily available for a village emergency, the other candidates lived very far away.

However, in 2005, Mayor Gerald Logan, Deputy Mayor Dan Colangelo, Trustee Bob Sorensen, Trustee Ken Manning, Trustee Pete Ciccone and Trustee Cicatelli decided not to hire Joe Carvin.

All Of These Main Stream Port Chester Republicans Unanimously Rejected The Hotheaded and Opportunistic Joe Carvin And His Harvard Degree.

They chose Bill Williams who did not have the local political connections or the Harvard Degree that Carvin can’t stop bragging about. Bill Williams even lived far away and might have trouble quickly responding to emergencies in Port Chester.

Why no City, Town, Village or Hamlet in America has has ever hired Joe Carvin and his fancy Harvard Degree in Public Administration to be their Manager or Administrator?

What Made Logan, Colangelo, Sorensen, Manning, Ciccione and Cicatelli not support and hire their fellow Republican Joe Carvin?

09-28-07 The Rye Town Report Is Wrong

It Is Not True That Rye Brook Taxes Have Went Down 1.5% This Year.

Rye Brook Taxes Have Actually Went Up Year After Year After Year.

This Year Rye Brook Taxes Have Gone Up 2% This Year Alone.

The Only Local Governmental That Has Reduced Taxes Two Years In A Row Is The Town Of Rye.

The Village Of Port Chester, The Village Of Rye Brook and The Schools have all failed to reduce taxes like the Town Of Rye.

Unfortunately, The Village Of Rye Brook has not had a full blown New York State Comptroller's audit since the 1990's.

The Office of the State Comptroller needs to audit the Village Of Rye Brook.

A State Controller Audit help ensure that Rye Brook funds are used efficiently, and assets are adequately protected against fraud, waste and abuse.

Year after year after year Rye Brook's own internal auditors have repeatedly said, "We can not express an opinion on the effectiveness of the village's internal control over financial reporting. Accordingly, we express no such opinion."

This reporter has personally set at Rye Town Board Meetings and repeatedly overheard Joe Carvin, Janus Richards, Sam Terenzi, Bernie and Richard Abel comment about Rye Brook Mayor Lawrence Rand and the whether Rye Brook is operating economically or efficiently. They even have speculated on if Rye Brook has complied with all the laws of New York State.

I have also heard Joe Carvin, Janus Richards, Sam Terenzi, Bernie and Richard Abel speculate on if Rye Brook has inefficiencies of uneconomical practices.
I have often said that it not is said at government meetings while the cameras are on that is not very interesting. It is what is said before and after government meetings when the cameras are turned off.
You can really hear an ear full after Rye Town Board Meetings when Joe Carvin, Janus Richards and Sam Terenzi get ready to take Port Chester Republican Billy Vilanova and the disgruntled founder and the publisher of the Westmore News to the Port Chester Coach Diner to talk about hogwash the Abels will print in their hopelessly biased newspaper.
However, I must say all this political chatter from Joe Carvin and his disgruntled band of close advisers concerns me, because let's face it Joe Carvin often tries to present himself as some sort of wanna be expert on government audits.

Yes it is true that it is kind of spooky how Joe Carvin has became sort of a magnet for disgruntled and sleazy opportunists with checkered pasts.

Yes it is also true that most intelligent thinking persons just ignore the Bernie Abels and Sam Terenzis of this world.

Further, I argue that it is better to be safe than sorry.

Let's face it a lot of elections in Rye Brook go uncontested election cycle after election cycle after election cycle.

Rye Brook Government has sort of turned into an Old Girl's Club, where local politicians try to keep each other's skirts down.

Please join Joe Carvin, Janus Richards, Sam Terenzi, Bernie Abel, Richard Abel and I as we demand that Rye Brook to submit to a full blown State Controller's Audit.

It is time for Rye Brook submit to a State Controller's Audit just like Port Chester, Rye City and Rye Town have.

If I have heard Rye Brook resident Dick Hubert say it once I have heard him say it a thousand times....

"We need financial transparency at all levels of government."

Please call state Controller Thomas P. DiNapolli at 518-474-4044 and demand that he audit the Village Of Rye Brook immediately.

It is fiscally irresponsible for the Village Of Rye Brook not to have been audited by the State Controller's office since the 1990's.

You can also email State Controller Thomas P. DiNappoli at osdc@osc.state.ny.us to demand ask him why there has been no state audit of Rye Brook since the 1990's.

It looks like State Controller Thomas P. DiNappoli is asleep at the switch when it comes to providing the residents of Rye Brook with financial transparency.

Purchase businessman Joseph LaManna thought he had made a good deal when he bought the former home of Gov. Herbert Lehman there - until he found people building another home on what he believed was his front lawn.

It turned out the property LaManna had bought was not the 4-acre site he thought but a 2.2-acre, L-shaped parcel. What appeared to be his lawn had been sold to someone else.

The episode from 2003 is just one chapter in what an attorney for LaManna and John and Antonella DeBello of Purchase describe as an elaborate scheme cooked up by more than a dozen people, including a real estate agent, a lawyer, an insurance agent - and businessman Albert Tarantino, a Republican now running for New Rochelle City Council.......

.......Some of the people involved are alleged to have filed insurance claims falsely stating that broken water pipes had caused damage in various homes or inflating the values of property that had been damaged. Three men - Louis Cordasco Jr., John Liscio and Robert DiDonato - have been indicted on federal criminal fraud charges in the actions. Attorneys for Liscio and Cordasco said their clients denied the allegations. Attorneys for DiDonato did not return calls.

Lawrence Goldman, an attorney for Cordasco, the chairman of the Port Chester company Crystal Restoration Enterprises, said Cordasco was accused of inflating the value of water-damaged rugs, a claim he disputes. Like Santangelo, Goldman is asking Robinson to dismiss the accusations against his client........

Port Chester man accused of beating Conn. girl, holding her captive

STORY:

A village man who held a Connecticut runaway captive for 14 months, physically abused her and having a child with her, is due in Village Court today, police said.

The 18-year-old New London girl left home July 2, 2006, with Charles Carrieri, 27, whom she met on the Internet, Lt. James Ladeairous said.

Although reported missing by her mother, no one knew she was in the village. Carrieri did not let her out of the 75 Purdy Ave. home, nor did she have access to a phone, Ladeairous said.

In December 2006, he began physically abusing her, police said. She is now unable to open her left eye, Ladeairous said, because she has a seriously damaged eye socket from repeated pummeling. So obvious was the damage that police brought her immediately to Greenwich Hospital when she walked into police headquarters Tuesday morning with her mother........

Part one of two A new kind of train arrived in Stamford on Oct. 5, 1907.

The slower, less reliable steam-powered train sets had been replaced with groundbreaking electric trains, capable of getting commuters and travelers on the New York, New Haven and Hartford rail line between New York City and Stamford in 50 minutes.

The train left Grand Central Terminal at 9:09 a.m. and arrived at Stamford at 10:29 a.m. That is arrived one minute late appeared to be the only reported problem.

'Everything worked lovely,' Hoge Gilliam, a railroad superintendent, told The Advocate at the time.

Interviews with passengers revealed the ride was smoother than a steam locomotive and spared them the distractions of soft coal smoke and cinders. They also marveled about how the electric train seemed to accelerate and decelerate so quickly.

By 12:18 p.m., the first train back to New York left the Stamford station with about 100 passengers. The train carried mainly summer vacationers with a few commuters from Stamford and Greenwich, The Advocate reported.

The electric service, which began along the New Haven Line a few months before the first Stamford train -- in New Rochelle, N.Y., that July and at Port Chester, N.Y., in August -- marked a landmark development for the region's railroad that helped bring ridership to peak levels. Only a few years later, the rise of the automobile and increasing mismanagement issues caused commuting numbers to plummet..........

The other Greenwich murder

Source: New York Daily News

Summer was in its Labor Day swoon, and eighth grade loomed just ahead for Matthew Margolies.

His footloose days were numbered, so he decided to spend Aug. 31, 1984 - Friday of the holiday weekend - pursuing his favorite hobby: angling.

The gangly 13-year-old was Greenwich, Conn.'s version of Huck Finn. He was rarely seen without a fishing pole, stalking chubby trout in the Byram River near his home on Pilgrim Drive, which traverses the border between Greenwich and Port Chester, N.Y.

Young Margolies lived with his mother, Maryann, and older sister in the blue-collar Pemberwick section of Greenwich, far from the broad lawns and mansions of Belle Haven.

Maryann Margolies worked as a nurse, and Matthew was a latchkey kid, splitting time between his own home and that of his maternal grandmother, who lived a few blocks away.
It had been a difficult year for Matthew.

His parents had split up, and he had become estranged from his father, who moved to Texas. His beloved grandfather and angling guru, George Miazga, had died earlier that month, leaving Matthew without a fishing buddy...........

Skydivers tackle Pond Swoop challenge

Source: Poughkeepsie Journal

From pizza man to miracle man.

That wouldn't be the bad title for a biography of skydiver Jeff (Jeffro) Provenzano.

Last weekend, the former Port Chester/current Arizona resident won the 11th annual Pond Swoop Nationals skydiving competition at The Blue Sky Ranch in Gardiner.

The victory was the fourth straight at Gardiner for Provenzano, who won $4,000, taking the straight lane, carving lane and freestyle/expression and overall championships.

Straight lane, carving lane skydiving?

At Gardiner, this means exiting a plane at 4,000 feet, deploying your canopy at about 3,000 feet and "slowing" to about 60 miles per hour. Then you drag a foot as far as you can through the water in a designated lane of a 250-foot-long pond, then land on the ground - points added for style.

Freestyle requires basically the same skills, with a tough trick thrown in.
Provenzano's trick was the "miracle man" in which he did a complete 360, landing with his canopy lines twisted.

"People are doing things that five years ago were never dreamed of," said Gardiner resident Kamuran Bayrasli, a competitor who owns the Ranch's pro shop..........
