12/24/07 - "The last few winters, Metro-North hasn't shoveled their property in violation of an ordinance," says Port Chester police Sgt. Mark Braccio

Michael Elpern had a simple request. He wanted to avoid breaking his neck as he walked from his parking spot at the Port Chester train station to the train he takes to and from Manhattan. But a week after the first messy snowstorm of the season, this Port Chester resident still had to pick his way over mounds of snow and slippery ice-covered sidewalks. Someone wasn't doing his job.

Elpern called the village police ...

11/26/07 - Metro-North customers get a 5 percent discount on cars rented from the Port Chester Train Station. Cars can be rented by the day or hour

HEADLINE:

QUOTE:

"The railroad has worked hard to provide transportation for all people in our region, not just the commuter traveling in and out of Grand Central Terminal every day," said Metro-North President Peter Cannito in a press release. "There are more and more people traveling out of New York, within the suburbs and for sightseeing jaunts. This rental car program has been designed to serve customers who need an end-to-end transportation package."

STORY:

Connecticut Post - Metro-North Railroad is betting that bringing car rentals to the train stations will help it land more suburbs-bound tourists and commuters.

Monday, the railroad announced an agreement with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to have automobiles available at 23 New York rail stations. The agreement does not extend into Connecticut, where rental cars have been available at two stations for years.

10/24/07 - Port Chester Train Station To Get MTA Makeover

If you hang out at the Fordham, Tarrytown, Port Chester or Mamaroneck stations, life will only get sweeter–Metro-North has earmarked nearly a million dollars to refurbish them as part of an “ongoing effort to bring its facilities to a state of good repair and to improve the customers’ experience.”

Metro-North isn’t providing much detail as to what they’ll do, but it appears Port Chester is getting new windows and doors and Mamaroneck a new waiting room.

10/12/07 - Keepin Up With The Jones. Greenwich Rasises Parking Fees 10% In Order To Keep Up With Port Chester.

The Board of Selectmen voted 2-1 yesterday to increase parking permit fees by 10 percent at train station and municipal lots throughout town.

The new rates would take effect next October at a total of 11 lots, and would generate approximately $147,000 in additional revenue each year for Greenwich's parking fund, according to figures provided by Alan Corry, the town parking services director. The increases will affect parking permits, not parking meters.

First Selectman Jim Lash said the increase will help replenish the parking fund for maintenance at structures, such as the Town Hall garage, which is undergoing more than $400,000 in construction now.

'My concern continues to be that we need money to spend on our parking facilities,' Lash said.
The changes will see annual fees at nine lots, including all outdoor railroad parking lots, increase from $242 to $266. Those include Arcadia Road, Carrona Drive, Horseneck Lane, Iron Horse Lane, Steamboat Road/Arch Street, Loughlin Avenue and Riverside, Old Greenwich and Cos Cob railroad stations. Rates at the covered parking garage downtown will rise from $423 to $465 per year, and at the West End lot in Old Greenwich from $165 to $181 per year.

Selectman Penny Monahan opposed the measure, saying Greenwich's parking permit rates are in line with those in towns such as Darien, Westport and Rye, N.Y. But Lash and Selectman Peter Crumbine said the rates are far lower than those in neighboring towns such as Stamford and Rye. In Stamford, annual parking permits can cost more than $1,000, outdoor parking permits cost $505 per year in Port Chester, according to Corry.

'I'm always reluctant to characterize other people's spending as moderate, but this (the new rates) wouldn't be out of line with the two adjacent towns,' Lash said.....

Part one of two A new kind of train arrived in Stamford on Oct. 5, 1907.

The slower, less reliable steam-powered train sets had been replaced with groundbreaking electric trains, capable of getting commuters and travelers on the New York, New Haven and Hartford rail line between New York City and Stamford in 50 minutes.

The train left Grand Central Terminal at 9:09 a.m. and arrived at Stamford at 10:29 a.m. That is arrived one minute late appeared to be the only reported problem.

'Everything worked lovely,' Hoge Gilliam, a railroad superintendent, told The Advocate at the time.

Interviews with passengers revealed the ride was smoother than a steam locomotive and spared them the distractions of soft coal smoke and cinders. They also marveled about how the electric train seemed to accelerate and decelerate so quickly.

By 12:18 p.m., the first train back to New York left the Stamford station with about 100 passengers. The train carried mainly summer vacationers with a few commuters from Stamford and Greenwich, The Advocate reported.

The electric service, which began along the New Haven Line a few months before the first Stamford train -- in New Rochelle, N.Y., that July and at Port Chester, N.Y., in August -- marked a landmark development for the region's railroad that helped bring ridership to peak levels. Only a few years later, the rise of the automobile and increasing mismanagement issues caused commuting numbers to plummet..........

The other Greenwich murder

Source: New York Daily News

Summer was in its Labor Day swoon, and eighth grade loomed just ahead for Matthew Margolies.

His footloose days were numbered, so he decided to spend Aug. 31, 1984 - Friday of the holiday weekend - pursuing his favorite hobby: angling.

The gangly 13-year-old was Greenwich, Conn.'s version of Huck Finn. He was rarely seen without a fishing pole, stalking chubby trout in the Byram River near his home on Pilgrim Drive, which traverses the border between Greenwich and Port Chester, N.Y.

Young Margolies lived with his mother, Maryann, and older sister in the blue-collar Pemberwick section of Greenwich, far from the broad lawns and mansions of Belle Haven.

Maryann Margolies worked as a nurse, and Matthew was a latchkey kid, splitting time between his own home and that of his maternal grandmother, who lived a few blocks away.
It had been a difficult year for Matthew.

His parents had split up, and he had become estranged from his father, who moved to Texas. His beloved grandfather and angling guru, George Miazga, had died earlier that month, leaving Matthew without a fishing buddy...........

Skydivers tackle Pond Swoop challenge

Source: Poughkeepsie Journal

From pizza man to miracle man.

That wouldn't be the bad title for a biography of skydiver Jeff (Jeffro) Provenzano.

Last weekend, the former Port Chester/current Arizona resident won the 11th annual Pond Swoop Nationals skydiving competition at The Blue Sky Ranch in Gardiner.

The victory was the fourth straight at Gardiner for Provenzano, who won $4,000, taking the straight lane, carving lane and freestyle/expression and overall championships.

Straight lane, carving lane skydiving?

At Gardiner, this means exiting a plane at 4,000 feet, deploying your canopy at about 3,000 feet and "slowing" to about 60 miles per hour. Then you drag a foot as far as you can through the water in a designated lane of a 250-foot-long pond, then land on the ground - points added for style.

Freestyle requires basically the same skills, with a tough trick thrown in.
Provenzano's trick was the "miracle man" in which he did a complete 360, landing with his canopy lines twisted.

"People are doing things that five years ago were never dreamed of," said Gardiner resident Kamuran Bayrasli, a competitor who owns the Ranch's pro shop..........
