03/02/11 Port Chester Blogger Rebecca Carriero Says Goodby Cafe Roma

Five Alarm Fire in Port Chester - Goodby Cafe Roma

So that’s it. One of my favorite dusty haunts, filled with celluloid and real life characters – one more vestige of time burned down in a five alarm fire not too far from my house.

Devastated families and my friend Joy – what’s next for them?

Cafe Roma is the interesting little place I wrote about for its set of yellowing film posters and Sophia Loren look-a-like bar maid, Joy.

I'm always a little suspicious of fires in gentrifying neighborhoods – particularly my own. There have been other a few other strips of downtown Port Chester that seem to have been conveniently torched in the past, like the fire station, yes fire station on South Main (which was replaced by cardboard looking store front)...and the strip of business on North Main that went up in flames when Costco threw its weight around and drastically altered the face of downtown PC. But many locals dismiss these as old buildings, with faulty electricity.... which just happened to be located in a changing business district - an unfortunate coincidence.

In the case of Cafe Roma, at the moment - there's nothing to support my lingering thought.

01/20/08 - Port Chester Newswire

RYE TOWN - A local Democratic leader threw a jab at Supervisor Joseph Carvin last week, charging the newly elected Republican went back on his word in his first week in office.

"His big promise (in the campaign) was not to give out these no-bid professional service contracts," said Gary Stracuzzi, Port Chester's Democratic Party chair. "This is the fastest I've seen someone break a major campaign promise."

In his first meeting as town supervisor on Jan. 8, Carvin awarded no-bid hires to Sam Terenzi as the town's new accountant and Paul Noto as soon-to-be town attorney. Stracuzzi said the decision contradicted Carvin's campaign last fall, where he repeatedly blasted the past administration's use of no-bid contracts - critiques echoed by a New York State Comptroller's report on the town.....

....Noto is a partner at Strategic Political Consulting, a firm that spearheaded Carvin's campaign. Carvin said Noto's campaign work was "not determinate in any way of my decision-making process."....

...."It wasn't fair that every failing was blamed on Mr. Terenzi," he added. "I'm thrilled he has the opportunity to clear his reputation.".....

08/07/07 - Costcos Non-compliance Is A Mystery To Westchester's Consumer Protection Department

Headline

Story

Three months after Westchester's Consumer Protection Department asked grocery store operators to provide warnings about the dangers of high levels of mercury in fish, Costco stores in Port Chester, Yonkers and New Rochelle are still not in compliance, the department says.

The department said the Stew Leonard's in Yonkers also does not have signs or provide brochures indicating that young children and some women should avoid eating seafood with high levels of mercury, but a Stew Leonard's spokeswoman said that is not true.

Meghan Flynn, who works out of the Stew Leonard's office in Norwalk, Conn., said a sign in the seafood department provides a U.S. Food and Drug Administration warning about mercury and refers shoppers to the consumer protection department's Web site, http://www.westchestergov.com/consumer/.

......But the reasons behind why Costco is not in compliance are a mystery to the department.

"They haven't given us any indication why they haven't (complied with the request)," said John Gaccione, a department spokesman. "We've certainly made every effort to contact them."

Calls placed yesterday to Costco in Issaquah, Wash., were not returned.

Soundness of bulkhead, maintenance of promenade among concerns

By Jananne Abel

Bricks are sinking in the riverfront promenade that surrounds the Costco parking lot in downtown Port Chester. Is this something that can be easily repaired or a sign of structural damage below? That’s something the village must determine through further investigation and then figure out what to do about it.
