10/26/07 - 'Just Me Again'

When Rachael Sage was growing up in Port Chester, N.Y., it was evident she would enjoy a career in the arts. The only question was which discipline she would embrace.

Sage, a self-taught pianist, was writing songs at age 4. She was accepted into Manhattan's prestigious School of American Ballet while in junior high school. An accomplished painter, she received a drama degree from Stanford University in California.

"Diversity is good," Sage said while calling from her Manhattan apartment. "It's really great to be able to do a number of things well. But it became apparent that it would be best for me to harness my drive into one endeavor. I found that if I didn't focus on one thing, I would never build any momentum for myself."

Sage decided to go with music in 1995, and the move paid quick dividends. Two years later, she landed a coveted spot on the Lilith Fair tour after winning a New York talent contest.....

Teresa Brewer, 76, a bold-voiced singer whose novelty hit "Music! Music! Music!" established her as a jukebox favorite in the 1950s and secured her four-decade career performing in nightclubs and on Las Vegas stages, died Oct. 17 at her home in New Rochelle, N.Y. She had progressive supranuclear palsy, a brain disorder.

Ms. Brewer was a veteran radio performer at 19, when "Music! Music! Music!" became a pop-chart smash in 1950 with its bouncy Dixieland-ensemble backup and command to "put another nickel in, in the nickelodeon."

After a period of similar fare, she won over audiences as a balladeer singing "Till I Waltz Again With You" (which reportedly sold more than 1.4 million copies), "Let Me Go, Lover" and "A Sweet Old-Fashioned Girl."

Her voice was startlingly brassy for a 5-foot-2, 100-pound singer, and the disparity prompted jokes. Referring to a brash nightclub performer, entertainer Bing Crosby joked that Ms. Brewer was the "Sophie Tucker of the Girl Scouts." Time magazine called Ms. Brewer "a topnotch singer with a voice somewhere between a blowtorch and a cello."

A striking brunette -- later a blond -- she was cast as a star of the musical western film "Those Redheads from Seattle" (1953) and was a mainstay of television variety shows for several years.....

....She was credited as co-author of several songs, including "I Love Mickey," a novelty tune she recorded with New York Yankees center-fielder Mickey Mantle in 1956.

Her first marriage, to William Monahan, ended in divorce. Thiele, whom she married in 1972, died in 1996.

Survivors include four children from her first marriage, Kathleen Monahan-Granzen of Rye Brook, N.Y., Susan M. Dorot of White Plains, N.Y., Megan Ahearn of Port Chester, N.Y., and Michelle McCann of New Rochelle; a stepson, Bob Thiele Jr. of California; a brother; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

Marching bands compete in Port Chester

STORY:

Rafael Garcia was a tad nervous yesterday, but didn't have the jitters he felt the week before when the Port Chester High School marching band performed at Giants Stadium.

"This is much calmer," the 17-year-old tuba player said of yesterday's 25th annual Musical Arts Conference competition at Port Chester High School.

"The sound is so much bigger in Giants Stadium," Garcia said, looking crisp in his navy blue uniform. "With the 10-foot wall we had to play over, we had to keep our horns up."

There were no walls to muffle the sound at the high school's football field. Eleven New York and Connecticut marching bands, including the Port Chester Middle School Band, provided energetic and colorful performances to about 1,000 spectators filling the stands.

You might think the man who has had a big say in the music coverage of Rolling Stone since 1997 must be a rock snob by definition. Not so, says Joe Levy, executive editor of the magazine since February 2006.''

I still believe in the pop audience, and in the wisdom of the pop audience, that the pop audience validates interesting music by buying, listening and responding to it,'' says Levy, whose publication has a circulation of 1.3 million and a readership of 13 million.

While there are fewer central figures and the scene is more diffuse, Levy maintains, ''There is still good music near the top of the charts. Young, challenging, inventive rock bands such as such as The Arcade Fire and Spoon put out records that can be in the Billboard Top 20.....

Cops: Man leaps from third floor to avoid Port Chester police, breaks ankles

A homeless man took a leap of faith while trying to elude Port Chester police yesterday afternoon - but ended up with two broken ankles and an arrest warrant for his pains.

Curtis Stamps, 39, jumped from a third-floor bathroom at 13 Weber Drive as village police escorted a Child Protective Services agent there for an unrelated visit, explained Lt. Jim Ladeairous, Port Chester police.

"He has family there, but he's been given notice that he's not allowed on the property," Ladeairous said. "I guess he decided to elude us and jumped out the third-floor window and busted both his ankles."

Stamps has been banned from the Housing Authority's Weber Drive complex since April 2006, Ladeairous said. Police had a warrant for his arrest for criminal trespass, a misdemeanor, stemming from an Aug. 27, 2007, call that he was on the property.

A May 2006 effort to elude police on the property had also proved unsuccessful: Stamps threw his bicycle at an officer who tried to arrest him for trespassing on the parking lot. He was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and third-degree criminal trespass and resisting arrest, misdemeanors.......

NEW YORK — Nine cleaners who spent months after the 9/11 terror attacks working in offices, apartments and stores near Ground Zero have sued their employers for a variety of wage violations, according to The New York Times.

The suit alleges that cleaning companies failed to pay overtime, failed to keep true time records, and failed to comply with a state requirement that companies provide an extra hour of pay whenever employees work 10 or more hours a day, the story stated......

Group preserves Italian heritage

The Bridgeport Area Cultural Italian Organization is best known by its acronym, BACIO, which means "kiss" in Italian. BACIO sponsors lectures, dinners, films, Italian language classes and even wine-making sessions to fulfill its mission.Former Bridgeport Mayor Leonard S. Paoletta, who heads the group, said he is determined to do all he can to deepen Italian-Americans' appreciation of for their heritage.

"We should know whence we came and about all the contributions our forebears made to the world," said Paoletta, noting the influence of Italians in music, science and many other fields.

From his home in Easton, Paoletta regularly e-mails BACIO news to its 275 members. About 40 percent of members are from Bridgeport, a city that historically has had a large Italian-American population.

Paoletta, 72, has been a state workers' compensation commissioner since 1998. He likely will retire from the appointed position next March, at which time, he said, "I'll have more time to devote to BACIO."

Plaintiffs in the eminent domain lawsuit challenging Atlantic Yards have already received a major setback in the case, after a federal court judge dismissed it for failure to state a claim, and as the appeal proceeds, a fierce set of response briefs from the defense ups the ante considerably.

The plaintiffs (a mix of 15 homeowners, commercial property owners, and residential and business tenants) and the defense (government agencies and officials) see controlling issues quite differently. The defense, drawing on U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis’s emphatic opinion, declare that the inquiry should end because the government—the ESDC—found that the project would achieve a public purpose, including affordable housing, an arena, and open space.

While that reflects longstanding Supreme Court doctrine, the plaintiffs look at it from another angle, arguing in their appeals brief that the court’s 2005 Kelo v. New London decision and Justice Anthony Kennedy’s concurrence require a more transparent sequence, which must be followed for condemnation to be legitimate. And in response, the defense says that Kelo doesn’t apply to this case and, even if it did, the sequence was legitimate.

The plaintiffs’ framework to some degree pushes the envelope—the ESDC points to the paradox that most commentators believed that Kelo “confirmed—and possibly even loosened—the already extremely deferential judicial review of the public purposes of proposed takings.” But the plaintiffs think it gives them more leverage.

TZ Bridge recommendations will be delayed

The plan to present a preferred alternative for the Tappan Zee Bridge by February or March of next year will be pushed back.

The entire team working on the project of how to deal with the more than 50-year-old bridge and the need to enhance transportation capacity will present a new timetable next month, according to Michael Anderson, the state Transportation Department’s project manager.

Anderson told the Hudson Valley Regional Council meeting at Stewart Airport Tuesday the project is about more than just providing transportation from the Hudson Valley to New York City, but it will provide for a major east-west corridor.

"It's a 30 mile corridor between Suffern and Port Chester and if you extend, on either side with reasonable reach for the market, it easily becomes 60 miles," he said. "Now we've got .......

Recorded on February 19, 1971, the show that is featured in its entirety on Three from the Vault was the second of a lengthy, six-date engagement at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York. Considering how many events were weighing upon the Grateful Dead at the time, speculation might lead many to believe that the concert’s selection was tied to its historical significance. For starters, Mickey Hart was in the midst of a complete breakdown. After performing on the previous night, he took an enormous amount of medication to ease his mind, which caused him to fall asleep for three days. He subsequently retreated to his California ranch, leaving Bill Kreutzmann as the group’s lone drummer until October 1974. As the music contained on Three from the Vault demonstrates quite clearly, Kreutzmann slipped admirably into the role, and the result was a leaner, meaner outfit.

08/06/07 - Hologram Recorded Five Songs In Port Chester

STORY

The last day of tracking was last night. Will and Max from Lions & Tigers came up to Purchase, NY where we finished up the vocal tracking. This is the only collection of songs that I've tracked in the past month and a half that I will not be mixing myself.....

......Hologram was up here in Port Chester recording five songs from Thursday to Saturday. We recorded in this big Jazz rehearsal room at SUNY Purchase that has a huge sound. It was pretty fun recording in such a huge space and getting so much reverb and all that fun stuff! Uh-Huh!....

......Recording with these guys was really great. They are playing at this show "Serpent Fest" in Brooklyn this weekend. Here's the flyer, which is drawn by my friend Jason Roy!

Edo is the prototypical Japanese hibachi place except for the ordinary food part. The food is excellent, portions are generous, and the ambiance is nice. A chicken hibachi dinner with soup, salad, main course, and ice cream dessert is only $17. What a deal! You also get a fun show with the chef twirling the knive and throwing shrimp tails in his hat. It's right near the Home Depot and right off the I287 exit off I95. I give it 4 out of 4 yum-yums.

Mike Walker- Drummer, Percussionist, Producer


Mike has been playing the drums since the early age of 5. Growing up in a Pentecostal church in Port Chester, NY, Mike quickly discovered a love for the sound of the drums. Initially learning to play by ear, he would sit in the front row at church every Sunday picking up any tips he could from his older cousins, who played the drums as well. He didn’t have the opportunity to participate in a structured music program until he entered the 6th grade. There he participated in the marching, concert, and jazz bands, and also learned to read sheet music. At the age of 12, he auditioned & was elected to be a part of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), which is the largest, most successful MENC state unit in the United States. He continued to participate in bands throughout high school, where he competed in numerous competitions all over the east coast in marching & jazz bands. He was a part of the Port Chester High School Marching Band when they received 1st place, as well as Best Percussion in the US Scholastic Band Championships in 1995 & 1996.

After high school, Mike continued to play drums in church. He played for a local New York choir called Psalms of Refuge, out of Refuge Christian Center in Port Chester, NY. There he learned about being sensitive to the HOLY SPIRIT concerning his playing. Mike moved to New Jersey in 1999, but continued to travel back & forth to New York every weekend to play the drums at Refuge Christian Center because he felt that GOD had not released him to leave there as of yet. However in 2002, after plenty of prayer & thought, he became a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Lindenwold, New Jersey. He took a back seat for a while, as there were already more than enough drummers there. So Mike began to get into his BIBLE, and study the word of GOD more than he ever had before. For it was at Bethany that Mike learned first hand that GOD honors faithfulness & commitment. He waited patiently for his opportunity, attending every rehearsal he could, watching the other drummers and getting a feel for atmosphere. Still, he never gave up, and finally got his chance in 2004, when he started playing for the youth church. Mike played the drums there, as well as alternated services in the main sanctuary for drummers who were unavailable for a period of 2 years. During that period of time, Mike had the opportunity to play for some well known gospel artists such as Kim Burrell, Deitrick Haddon, Angela Spivey and Pastor Lonnie Hunter. He also started playing for a local group out of Bethany named Kevin Jarido & Nu Virtu, who released an album in 2006.
Mike started producing in 2006 as well. What started as a past time at home on the computer, has turned into an opportunity to once again show exactly how good GOD has been to him. He is currently trying to establish himself as a well known producer and arranger, which has been a dream of his for quite some time. As a reward for his commitment and his humble spirit, he was appointed to be the main drummer for the Disciples for Christ choir as well as Journey in 2007, which are two of the premier choirs at Bethany Baptist Church. The Disciples for Christ are scheduled to be working on an album this year as well.



Mike is known for his strong pocket and his creative fills. He has experience in a wide variety of music genres, and incorporates them all into one style to produce a one of a kind sound and feel. Mike has both performed and shared the stage with a host of talented groups & musicians. Currently he is touring & in the studio with Kevin Jarido &
Nu Virtu, who are working on there sophomore album. Mike’s promotion has not only been a testimony to others, but to himself as well. He has seen GOD open doors for him that he could have never opened on his own. His story is simple, and one to learn from. Put GOD first, and he will take care of the rest. Always acknowledge GOD in everything that you do, for without him, it would not be possible. Always remain humble, stay committed and remember, “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” Proverbs 18:16
