Village of Mamaroneck replaces legal team in Jewish school case.
MAMARONECK - After losing a federal appeal last week in a case against an Orthodox Jewish School, the village said yesterday that it is consulting with a new law firm on how to proceed.
"We approach every case with the intention of winning and that doesn't always happen," Mayor Phil Trifiletti said. "This was a very complicated case."
Last week, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court decision that the village zoning board violated a land-use law against religious discrimination in turning down the Westchester Day School's expansion project. Trifiletti said law firm Thacher Proffitt and Wood would no longer handle the case....
... The board adopted a resolution yesterday 5-0 creating a staff attorney position.
"It's time to fix a wheel that's been broken for a very long time," Trustee Toni Pergola Ryan said.
A salary has not been set for the position, but Murphy said a safe estimate would be$160,000. The figure was based on what Port Chester, a neighboring village with a similar makeup to Mamaroneck, pays its attorney. Murphy added the attorney could also require ...
