03/20/11 President Barack Obama Sends Letter Honoring Two Port Chester Firefighters

PORT CHESTER HERO'S

Domenick Cervi and Richard J. Salvatore have been volunteering with the Putnam Engine and Hose Company of the Port Chester Volunteer Fire Department for fifty years. The Port Chester Fire Department Captains have seen their share firefighting.

Both men were honored last night at the South End Firehouse and received a letter from President Barack Obama.

Both firefighters are lifelong Port Chester residents.

Their first fire was at an apartment complex at Purdy Avenue and South Main Street in 1961. The fire nearly destroyed a whole block as they and other firefighters fought thee fire forr more than six hours in icy conditions.

Captain Cervi was on the scene of the horrific Gulliver’s Nightclub fire in 1974, where 24 young people died.

Both captains recall fighting the five day long RB and W nuts and bolts factory on Midland Avenue.

Captain Salvatore was working for the Port Chester Schools at the time, but he worked every night to battle the factory fire.
