Port Chester Police: Drunk PC Man Sideswipes Driver, Narrowly Misses Patrol Car Before Crashing Into Pole
By Ace Port Chester Reporter Nik Bonopartis
A Port Chester man faces aggravated DWI charges after sideswiping another driver and crashing into a utility pole on Sunday, Port Chester police said.
The sideswiped driver called police at 1:52 a.m., telling officers a man in a Nissan Murano had struck her car and didn't stop, Lt. James Ladeairous said.
The woman followed the Nissan up Sand Street, relaying the SUV's direction to a police dispatcher. An officer who was in the area responded with lights and sirens activated and reached the intersection of Sand and Grace Church streets when the Murano came speeding past, nearly colliding with the police cruiser.
After the narrow miss, the SUV plowed into a utility pole, causing heavy damage to the vehicle's front end. Police pulled the intoxicated driver, Pedro E. Tapia, from the wrecked Nissan, but the Port Chester man was unhurt thanks to deployed airbags, Ladeairous said.
Tapia, 25, of 29 Central Ave., was charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated DWI, both misdemeanors. The latter charge carries more severe minimum penalties and is issued in cases where drivers register a blood alcohol level greater than .16, twice the legal limit.
Tapia was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a violation. He's scheduled to return to court later this week.
