04/03/11 College Notes: Port Chester's Jesse Burba At University Of Massachusetts

Baseball Splits Double-Header with Saint Rose

River Hawk baseball split Saturday's double-header at Saint Rose by scores of 3-2 and 4-5, respectively. In the win, pitcher Jack Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) struck out 12 batters and allowed just one hit.

UMass Lowell moves to 20-3 overall with the split and 7-1 in Northeast-10 play. Head coach Ken Harring now has seven consecutive 20-win seasons since taking over the program. The Golden Knights become 7-11 on the campaign and 1-5 in conference action.

Pitching dominated the early game as both team's struggled to generate offense. Leathersich was dominate on the mound, no-hitting Saint Rose through the opening five innings. Leathersich struck out nine of the first 15 batters he faced, including the side in the third.

The River Hawks snapped the stalemate in the top of the fifth, taking a 2-0 lead. With runners of second and third, Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) hit a one-out single into center field to clear the bases.

The Golden Knights broke their drought, plating a pair of runners in the sixth inning to tie the score at 2-2. Ryan Burke (Troy, N.Y.) drew a four-pitch walk and then was tripled home by Jesse Burba (Port Chester, N.Y.). An error on the next play allowed Burba to reach home as well.....
