Port Chester trustees decline to cut their salaries from budget The Journal News | LoHud.com PORT CHESTER — The village board passed up a small but symbolic way to trim the budget next year: eliminating their own pay. Trustee Daniel Brakewood pressed fellow trustees and the mayor Wednesday night to take their salaries out of the 2011-12 budget for a total savings of about $44,000. "Why is this board paid?" he asked, noting that school board members and neighboring Rye Brook village trustees are unpaid. Port Chester trustees earn $5,200 a year; the mayor gets $12,633. Mayor Dennis Pilla agreed, but the majority balked at setting a public hearing on such a change. Trustees Sam Terenzi and John Branca said each politician could decide whether to donate their pay to charity if they chose. Trustees Joseph Kenner and Luis Marino also voted against the hearing. Trustee Bart Didden was absent. Terenzi, an accountant, and Didden have said they aren't collecting a salary this year anyway because they haven't filed paperwork as village employees since being elected in June. Terenzi said he didn't want to force others to forgo their pay. The board is considering ways to trim a proposed $36.2 million budget and 3.72 percent tax-levy increase drafted by Village Manager Christopher Russo. ... | ||
