IS FACEBOOK CENSORSHIP MAKING PORT CHESTER A BETTER PLACE?

OR IS IT MAKING PORT CHESTER A BITTER PLACE?

  • Brian Harrod Over A Week Ago I Posted A Video At Making Port Chester A Better Place But It And The Comments About It Somehow Disappeared From The Group, So I Will Re-Post It Hear....

The Post and video that vanished from the group said....

Port Chester Residents Are Worried That Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin's Cost Saving Parks Plan Will Not Work In The Long Run.

Following the termination of the Rye Town parks foreman and his two employees last month. Port Chester residents have raised questions regarding the maintenance and care of the two parks the town oversees.

Rye Town and Crawford Parks are coveted outdoor spaces for Port Chester residents, and those who frequent their pathways, lawns and sand, have raised some questions.

Who will change the light bulbs, empty to trash, open the gate to the beach and make sure things are running safe and smoothly?

However, following the firing of the three town parks employees (and four other Town employees) on Dec. 7, local Port Chester residents have started to speak out about disrepair at Rye Town and Crawford Parks.

One area resident Deidra Curran released a Youtube of showing broken lights and signs, lights on in the locked bathrooms, and locked beach gate.On January 6,

Rye city councilwoman Catherine Parker sent an email to Rye Town Parks Commission Chairman Joe Carvin expressing concern that safety is at risk.“You would do well to follow the example of former NYC Mayor, Rudy Guiliani, who understood that this kind of neglect becomes the tipping point for vandals to start to think no one cares about the property, and to then do further harm,” Rye city councilwoman Parker wrote.

Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin basically has just passed the buck and said that that his secretary, Bishop Nowotnik is the head of facilities management now, and he needs to do more with less.

The supervisor has also expressed that the town expects the volunteers at the Friends of Crawford Park and Rye Town Park community organizations to do more to help out.

Laura Klein, the President of Friends of Crawford Park has said that she is concerned about the future of the park.

The problem is that year over year the Joe Carvin has cut services to our parks.

Greenway Property Services (GPS) now has a contract through March, 2013 to provide one worker who works half time Monday through Friday to empty trash at the parks and one handyman on Fridays to tend to general maintenance issues.

Just about everyone, but Joe Carvin understands that this is not enough manpower to properly maintain our parks.

GPS will report larger issues to Bishop Nowotnik, so that they can be bid out at an additional cost to the town Of Rye.The total cost for the two part-time GPS guys is about $1200 a week.

  • Keith Morlino I deleted it Brian Harrod ....I am all for freedom of the press second amendment rights and all, but sometimes if I feel a subject gets involved in political, duplicated or personal attacks I try to monitor it. I know it becomes a matter of opinion on what is politics and what is not.... but "editorializing" was not what I really intended on making port chester a better place. No offense to you, and I hope you understand I meant it for residents of PC. It's intended to inform and get PC residents to discuss what is happening in its community and how to improve it and take some action. The hope is and still is have residents attend a few more community type meetings ? volunteer ? take a little more of an active role in the community. Many have already commented on keeping it only for PC residents but I do believe ideas come from all over. In the past I have been critiqued and criticized on who and what I allow on this site and it is a topic that I need to discuss at one point to the group as a whole and see. The more residents join and get involved in the community the better ....republican ...democrats ...tea party ....conservative ..liberal ...I don't care as long as someone does not have an agenda on there own ..I'll let it fly ...as long as it does not bash any political party or person or show favor to one party or another .. I hope you understand on what I am trying to do
  • Brian Harrod Dear Kieth Morino,

I fail to see how an independent video about maintenance failures under the new Rye Town Park outsourcing policy is considered a political, or personal attack.

There was no personal attack in the post you deleted. There was only a reporting of the facts and the presenting of video documentation of the problem.

How are Port Chester residents going to make their parks and their village a better place if you editorialize through deleting posts you may not agree with?

I think the video and post was about Port Chester residents holding the Rye Town Park's Commission accountable for the maintenance of their parks and beach.

Personally, I am in favor of government outsourcing some services, because I earn my living by outsourcing office cleaning services at Westchester County corporations and government entities.

But if no one is held accountable, then government outsourcing contracts become a nightmare for homeowners who must pay to clean up the mess.

I know that you may be sensitive about the issue after this group earned a nasty reputation and a great deal of bad press by have some rather extreme members attacked the way Mayor Dennis Pilla taught a Sunday School class at Corpus Christi.

In my opinion it was appropriate to delete those nasty hate field posts.

But Kieth, I can not understand how you would delete a video and comments one week, then turn around and link to another news article that references the same video and comments.

How was it somehow a personal attack one week and not a personal attack the next week.

Kieth, I am very supportive of this group you founded, but transparency is the key to making this group successful force in improving Port Chester.

In my opinion, if you choose to delete an item, then you should immediately inform the group of what was censored and why.

How is this Facebook page going to help make Port Chester a better place if the ugly head of nasty partisanship is going to roar and silence diverse Port Chester voices through censorship.

Kieth I admire your handwork and efforts in this group, but without transparency and accountability you will lose the trust of Port Chester residents.

You certainly don't want to go back to earning press reports like this....

November 23, 2012: Controversial posts threaten existence of Facebook group, from our Local News section.
  • Dennis Pilla I am disappointed how Supervisor Carvin handled the issue of park maintenance at Rye Town Park.Firing the Rye Town Park maintenance crew, before he had a replacement plan in place for ALL Rye Town Park maintenance service requirements, and without a policy discussion with the Rye Town Park Commissioners was simply wrong.I will not criticize his choice to instead spend town taxpayer dollars to increase staffing over time for his Model American Community effort (which is a questionable government purpose to me), but the issue of insourcing or outsourcing Rye Town Park maintenance is a policy matter that should have first been discussed with the Rye Town Park Commission, which Mayor Feinstein, Mayor French and I are also members along with 2 others. Also, to me, terminating these workers so abruptly without any notice, right before the holidays, was also in bad form. Did you know that the Town also discontinued issuing hunting and fishing licenses because it was not a money maker for them... Cutting costs by cutting services is the wrong model for local government to follow.

  • Keith Morlino Here is the problem, Brian ... I don't know you again no offense , but I am not sure what your association with port chester is past , present or future. So I am not sure if your just posting to try to inform or have an as to grind. So if I am to stay true to this site ... I hope members comment on this site about who should be members and who should not be ...and as for comment and informing on deleted posts and why I do that ?.. I don't ....because it just perpetuates the reason why I deleted it ....until I know you better Brian Harrod ....I will be monitoring with a cautious optimism
  • Brian Harrod Dear Keith Morlino

It is silly to think that there is an x to grind and borders on the personal attacks that you say that you have tried to avoid.

I have moved back to Port Chester and have advocated for transparency and openness in Port Chester government in the past.

When I post a video about maintenance failures at local park or alert Port Chester residents that the Harrison EMS is considering decommissioning and ambulance and using mutual aid to divert Port Chester ambulances how can you say your just posting to try to inform or have an "ax to grind".

I guess the just about every Port Chester homeowner will have an "ax to grind" if they have to fund a new ambulance to make up for Harrison's milking the system.

    http://portchesterroundup.blogspot.com/2013/01/011913-mutual-aid-nightmare-port.html
  • Bart Didden Dennis Pilla I am not commenting on the actions of the Rye Town government, but I will say that under your leadership The Village of Port Chester has given up various tasks to other layers of government and has done many studies to out source a wide array of government responsibilities. Some of these have been proved as bad decisions by the services delivered to our residents but we never look back to assess the results and if a reversal is warranted.
  • Brian Harrod Dear Keith Morlino

There is still a lot of editing going on here at Making Port Chester A Better Place?

I just got a bunch of Facebook messages that said Dina Goren put up a post in this thread and they say it is now gone.

One person copied Ms.Goren's post and sent it to me in a message.

    The deleted post read.....

Keith Morlino I appreciate how difficult it is to be the administrator of a public page. Having recently created the Port Chester Dog Park page, I'm beginning to understand the challenges. I do, however, think that trying to understand the intent of someone's postings is nearly impossible (whether you know them or not). I've seen postings in this group that have appeared to be attacks on individuals or groups (from all sides) where I thought the intent was clear (and malicious). Perhaps you didn't delete those postings because you knew the people who posted them and understood their intent -- but from an outside perspective they appear as personal attacks. I attended the Rye Town Parks Commission meeting and I encourage anyone to watch the recorded video in order to understand the issues. I for one truly appreciate area residents like Deirdre Curran highlighting what is broken and bringing it to the public's attention. From my perspective, its not about putting blame on anyone, its about putting the pressure on the government to make sure our parks are respected and maintained in the future. I don't know Brian Harrod or you at all, but I do appreciate both of your postings as they keep me informed about the village and area I live in. So thank you both so much for that!

Kieth, many Making Port Chester A Better Place group members are wondering if you deleted this post too Kieth or did Ms. Goren get uncomfortable with all of censorship that is going on.

It is a shame that this type of censorship is occuring on Martin Luther King Day in Port Chester.
  • Keith Morlino Thank you Dina , but as you mention I try to keep this page above par ...it seems already Brian seems to be questioning my reasons and seems to be an underling attack about who and what should be a member of this group. So my advice is try as best as you can to monitor who says what and I think Brian owes and apology to me because I did not delete any posting.
  • Dina Goren Perhaps I've missed some past communication between Keith and Brian -- and I am certainly not looking to get in the middle here. I'm just voicing my independent opinions particularly since this thread is about something near and dear to me -- the area parks!

I did not delete my previous post -- perhaps there was some sort of glitch?

  • Dina Goren I actually don't see my earlier post either -- but I'm on my phone -- not always reliable!
  • Brian Harrod Dear Kieth,

This wholesale and arbitrary of editing village residents comments is only going to damage yours and the groups reputation.

Kieth if you delete something then you should inform all the members and explain why?

This group will have no credibility if things are not done in an open and transparent way.

For goodness sake you secretly deleted a video and related comments about burned out lights and other maintenance failures at a Park that Port Chester residents are paying for.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es-KR0QA0cA&feature=youtu.be

Kieth, you know that I support your efforts to use this group in an effort to make Port Chester a better place. I have promoted you and this group on my blog and Facebook pages for weeks.

    http://portchesterroundup.blogspot.com/2013/01/011313-checkout-facebook-group-called_7580.html

I have invited scores of Port Chester residents to join the group, but it hard to continue doing so if things are not open.

Kieth if things are not transparent here then you will never get the bipartisan and cooperative support that you desire.

And that will be a real shame, because we all want Port Chester to be a better place.

  • Keith Morlino Yeah so far I have not deleted anything on this page and the only thing I had deleted has been redundant info .. The same info...but if you feel strongly about an issue like myself ...I usually attend an BOT meeting like I did last time to discuss my views on how we should not build rentals on the united hospital site. I would love to meet you at the next BOT meeting. Will you be joining me ? I don't attend all but let me know which one you will be attending I will sure to introduce myself to you
  • Brian Harrod Fair enough Keith Morlino

I truly admire your public service efforts and agree with you on most issues. I have watched the Port Chester videos where you have spoken out in the past.

Currently, work and church obligations prevent me from attending many Port Chester meetings,

But I hope that I can reschedule somethings in the future to introduce myself and support your efforts.

But please consider my view that posts should not be deleted unless they are part of a vicious and hateful personal attack.

Censorship is a very touchy issue with me,

My youngest soon who is a Sargent in the United States Army is finishing up a seven year obligation.

While he was in Iraq he survived three IED attacks and earned eleven commendations defending the freedoms that we take for granted.

I worried and prayed for that boy everyday for so many months that he would come alive.

My eyes are currently tearing up as I recall that time.

There were some in his unit who did not make home to their loved ones.

I know I may be to emotional about this, but the last thing I want to see is having Port Chester voices silenced in a town that my son grew up in and loves.

Kieth, if anything, please go out of your way to be as open and transparent in this forum, because there are still brave young men and women paying the ultimate price far away from their loved ones.

The son of one of my church Pastors just returned home from Afghanistan just before Christmas,

I am sorry, but the censorship is a little raw with me.

Brave young men and women are dying and coming home injured fighting people who censor voices that they don't agree with.

We should not take the liberties that have been purchased with blood lightly. Please think twice before you delete the posts of others.

  • Dina Goren Just curious, does anyone besides Keith see my first post which Brian reposted (starting with "Keith Morlino I appreciate how difficult it is to be the administrator of a public page..."). I'm wondering if I should notify Facebook of this issue?

  • Keith Morlino It is there Dina Goren not sure why u don't see it
  • Brian Harrod I think that Keith Morlino and Bobby Thalheimer might be confusing my reposting Dina Goren's post with her original post, because I got a ton of Facebook messages saying they don't see the post.

If Kieth did not delete the post, then one of the other group administrators (Joan Grangenois-ThomasMaryRose Munnick or Tarin Gonzalez) may have deleted Dins'a post.

But the crazy part is why would someone want to keep Dina from saying....

• Caryn Severo Gutierrez If its the post about the dog park?... I see it
  • Keith Morlino Again no one deleted Dina Goren post. As for censorship, Brian Harrod , it is hard for me to comment based on your personal connection and you must be very proud of your son and for what he does for our country, but it some cases it becomes necessary when it does become personal like your making it on me kind of ...for example , your making it a point that your repeatedly believe someone deleted a post which everyone sees which is incorrect. I am truly sorry if you feel that way and I offended you but I hope you stop trying to make this issue on this small community site and make it a bigger problem then it really is. This will be my last comment on this subject and my best to you son Brian Harrod
  • Brian Harrod Dear Keith Morlino

In a post above you admitted that one week ago you deleted the video about maintenance problems at Rye Town Park.

Then while discussing this Dina Goren's post disappears and I get a bunch of Facebook messages saying that her posting was censored.

Even Dina has told you that she doesn't see her post.

If you Bobby Thalheimer and Caryn Severo Gutierrez truely see the deleted post then like the post that you see.

I think it is possible that the three of you are confused by the reposting of what Dina wanted to share with the group.

I will wait and see if you Bobby Thalheimer and Caryn Severo Gutierrez like the post that you claim to see.

  • Tarin Gonzalez @Brian and Dina, Dina's comment is there and never appeared to have been deleted. Probably, glitches within Facebook. I agree with Brian about transparency and feel that Brian has brought great information to the group, including the video of Rye park. But I also understand Keith's point. This group was formed to bring up issues and concerns that effect us all but keeping away from the political bs. Sometimes, I feel that we should not have any political figures on this page but the people of Port Chester ask valid questions that deserve to be answered by these people and not wait for those obnoxious BOT or city hall meetings to have them answered. I'll be the first one to admit that I refrain from voicing my extreme political views because I respect others opinions and know that everyone will not agree with me and doesn't need to do so. In the past, I have brought up some issues and afterwards encouraged people for themselves to search for this information (from reliable sources such as government and state websites not always the best but reports and transcript are official), for them to read it and interpret the information for themselves. I don't want my words to confuse and mis-inform no one. Transparency is a beautiful thing, but we must all be careful that it can be manipulated to appear truthful. This comment is not made in any shape or form to attack Brian or Keith or anyone on this page. I like what Keith and Brian said about meeting and think that's a great idea.
  • Brian Harrod Dear Caryn Severo Gutierrez,

Just as I thought you are confused by the postings in the thread.

You just liked a a post by Dina Goren which says.....

"Perhaps I've missed some past communication between Keith and Brian -- and I am certainly not looking to get in the middle here. I'm just voicing my independent opinions particularly since this thread is about something near and dear to me -- the area parks!

I did not delete my previous post -- perhaps there was some sort of glitch?"

When Dina refereed to her missing post that should have been a clue to you. Dina's post was definitely censored.

Now if Keith Morlino and Bobby will like the missing post they think they see, I think that the Making Port Chester A Better Place group members will discover the truth about censorship here.
  • Keith Morlino 4 people liked it so far
  • Caryn Severo Gutierrez Brian I'm not one to comment on the issues here but as a PC resident I do read all that is posted here. I'm not for or against anyone I just thought I'd comment on what I saw(see) my apologies if I stepped into this issue
  • Brian Harrod Dear Kieth Keith Morlino

I will go with Tarin Gonzalez explanation that there might be some glitch on Facebook and that is why some people can supposedly can seeDina Goren's post, while others can not.

I trust the people of Port Chester more that the folks at Facebook.

And Kieth, I will accept that you had the best of intentions when you deleted the Rye Town Park video last week.

At least you were man enough to admit that you deleted that post.

But I still feel that the members of this group should be notified if anything is deleted.

Maybe, before a video like this is deleted then at least two of the group administrators should approve the deletion.....

  • Brian Harrod Dear Bobby Thalheimer

With all do respect I think you were confused by the re-posting of Dina Goren's deleted post. A group that is looking to improve Port Chester and make progress can not be effective if Keith Morlino runs around arbitrarily and secretly censoring posts right and left.

As George Bernard Shaw once said....

"The first condition of progress is the removal of censorship."

This Facebook group needs transparency and accountability to truly be successful in Port Chester. And that is why I proposed that two or more group administrators should decide if a posting should be deleted or not.

Last week, when Kieth was secretly deleting a video of maintenance problems at Rye Town Park then I would argue that his censorship went to far.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es-KR0QA0cA&feature=youtu.be

Bobby, Kieth was basically helping Rye Town government officials sweep the truth under the rug.

Despite his "good intentions" or not.

I would also argue that our founding fathers, who risked their lives to give us the freedom of speech, would say that the deleting of Dina's comment yesterday was abhorrent?

Bobby, how is it going to make Port Chester a better place to silence Dina and keep her from posting.....

"Keith Morlino I appreciate how difficult it is to be the administrator of a public page. Having recently created the Port Chester Dog Park page, I'm beginning to understand the challenges. I do, however, think that trying to understand the intent of someone's postings is nearly impossible (whether you know them or not). Kieth's censorship dishonors offends those who paid the ultimate price to give you the freedoms that too many Americans take for granted.

And the funny thing is that by censoring the video of the Rye Town Park maintenance failures probably made more people aware of the problems.

I am not sure that Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin and his confidential secretary Bishop Nowotnik are too happy with Kieth's censorship now..

I would also guess that many Port Chester residents now agree with Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla's two month old statement about the decision made at Rye Town Park.....

"“I don’t know that they thought it all through. It’s one thing to have somebody mow the lawn. It’s another thing not to have anybody accountable for the grounds.”

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THAT THIS CONTROVERSIAL PORT CHESTER GROUP HAS RAN INTO TROUBLE IN THE VILLAGE.....

  • Local News: Controversial posts threaten existence of Facebook group

BY CLAIRE K. RACINE

A Facebook page dedicated to making Port Chester a better place has instead sowed discord among village residents, acting as a staging location for people to air complaints and rage against other residents.

Efforts by the administrators to manage the page only caused more controversy with allegations of cover-ups and censorship.

The page, appropriately called “Making Port Chester a better place,” was started on Aug. 16 by residents hoping to improve their village.

We started this page as a way of bringing the community together,” said Liz Rotfeld, one of the founders. “Since it started, there have been several instances when people’s posts have been very negative.”

One such instance was last week when one of the members posted a comment railing against Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla about a religion class he had taught for Corpus Christi Church. George Otero, whose son was in the class, chose to personally attack Pilla on the Facebook page.

Rotfeld, after conferring with the other administrators of the page, including fellow founder Keith Morlino, decided to eliminate the post, and the comments that followed it, because it was not appropriate.
“A page like that should not be used for attacks on people,” she said.

After deleting the initial thread, Rotfeld posted an explanation on the page. This prompted another outpouring of anger, with many of the messages directed at Rotfeld for “censoring” the page. Eventually, the 100+ comments on the deletion were also removed. Both Rotfeld and Morlino stand by their decision to eliminate both the post and subsequent response because they were not germane to the topic of the page.

Otero, who first railed against Pilla and then spoke out about the deletion of his post, refused to comment on his reasons for writing on the Facebook page and the administrators’ decision to eliminate his posts.
This is not the first time a comment has been deleted from the Facebook account......
