08/18/07 - Neighborhood Intruder Alert

HEADLINE:

Police continue to search for Byram burglar

STORY:

Police searched late Thursday night for a burglar who broke into an apartment at a town housing complex in Byram police said.

Around 11 p.m., a resident called police after returning home, saying that an intruder was in her ground-floor apartment at 77 Vinci Drive, Lt. Daniel Allen, a police department spokesman said.
The victim did not see the intruder, who fled the apartment through a rear window before police arrived, Allen said.

Patrol officers searched the neighborhood and called in a police search dog from the Harrison, N.Y., police department, but did not find the burglar, Allen said.

There have been no other reported burglaries in the Byram area this month, Allen said.
It was undetermined if any property was stolen, said Allen, who declined to release additional details about the burglary. The Criminal Investigations Division is handling the case, according to Allen.

The building is one of three managed by the Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich, Terry Mardula, deputy director of the housing authority, said.

In July police arrested a Port Chester man who allegedly broke into a Byram home where a family was sleeping. The homeowner was awakened by noises in the house, and confronted the prowler, who was in his basement.

A short time later, police found the man in front of Johnny Cakes, a 24-hour diner in Byram, where the homeowner identified him.

That man, Cesar H. DeSouza, 20, of 218 Cleveland St., Port Chester, was charged with second-degree burglary and is scheduled to appear next in state Superior Court in Stamford on Sept. 25, according to the Criminal Clerk's Office.........

08/18/07 - Port Chester Peruvians Desparate To Contact Loved Ones After Earthquake Around Chincha

HEADLINE:

For Peruvians, a desperate effort to reach home

STORY:

Peruvian families were spending much of yesterday trying to get through to relatives back home, while television stations brought images of devastation from Wednesday's powerful earthquake on the Pacific coast.


"We received the news that my grandpa's house - it's, like, gone," said Paola Garcia, an 18-year-old graduate of Port Chester High School. "All the family from my dad's side, they lost their houses."


Her father's family is from Chincha, a town about 100 miles southeast of the capital city of Lima where hundreds were injured or killed. The country's death toll was in the hundreds last night in the wake of the 8-magnitude earthquake and a series of aftershocks. Garcia's hometown of Lima withstood strong tremors, but Chincha and areas south were badly hit. Churches and homes turned to rubble, and roads were left impassable.


Somehow, Garcia's grandfather, unable to flee his home, survived the building collapse, she said. A cousin in Chincha e-mailed from his cell phone: "I'm OK, everything is OK, I'll talk to you later."


"It's really hard when you are not able to talk to them," Garcia said.


Telephone and cellular service remained spotty yesterday. At Costamar Express in Port Chester, which has a row of phone booths for long-distance calls, customers tried unsuccessfully to get through to Peru yesterday morning, business owner Fabian Mendez said.


"Many of them were desperate," he said.......

A lien of $23,200 was filed against Foot of Fifth LLC last week to cover the first day's cleanup after electrical transformers began leaking oil July 12 into the Shetucket River.......

"They are still very interested, and hopefully we'll see some direction from corporation counsel by early September as to how to proceed," Lathrop said. "They have my support. They have a good track record and know how to get financing."........

Maybe if Richard Abel was not going to all those late night Port Chester, Rye Brook and Rye Town Meetings to bad mouth the Town Of Rye he just might be able to keep up with what's going on in Port Chester.

Plus all of those late night meetings at the Port Chester Coach Dinner plotting with Joe Carvin, Janus Richards and Billy Vilanova is really effecting the quality of the Westmore Snooze.

If you want to give Bernie or Richard a hot news tip why don't you come to the next Rye Town Meeting this Tuesday night and try to talk to them after they are done screaming and yelling for the cable TV cameras.

08/09/07 What The Heck Have Jananne Abel And Liz Sadler Been Smoking? Cesar Ruiz And Sam Terenzi Are Not Really Running For Rye Town Supervisor.

Of coarse Richard and Bernie Abel missed the story that has tongues wagging all over Port Chester.

The story is that Rye Town Supervisor-Wanna-Be Joe Carvin finally had his big fund raiser at Oakland Beach at Rye Town Park. Problem is that less than 35 supporters bothered to show up.

This fund raiser appears to have been a complete disaster.

But the story gets better the few supporters that Supervisor-Wanna-Be Joe Carvin attracted paid big bucks to eat at his beach side party.

However, there was one problem Carvin's caterer never showed up.

Unfortunately, the 30 some party goers that paid big bucks to eat with the Harvard Educated hedge fund guy Joe Carvin, went home hungry.

Word is many of Harvard Educated hedge fund guy's guests had to go through the Mc Donald's drive through window after waiting hours and hours for his caterer to show up.

It is pretty bad when a Harvard Educated hedge fund guy that wants to run Rye Town Park and Crawford Park can't even handle feeding about 30 people at his own political fund raiser.

Worse yet the Harvard Educated hedge fund guy that can't even feed his high paying guests wants to be in charge of all the school and property taxes.

Please don't get me started on how greedy hedge fund guys are destroying the credit and real estate markets.

The housing market has pretty much dried up here in Port Chester.

The liquidity problem caused by these greedy hedge fund guys is killing real estate deals right and left in Port Chester.

The mess that these greedy hedge fund guys are causing is having a rippling effect on the housing market in Port Chester.

Let's face it, if someone with excellent credit can't find a buyer for his existing house, then he probably can't afford to buy your house in Port Chester.

It looks like the Federal Reserve is going to have to use your hard earned tax dollars to bail out these greedy hedge fund guys in order to keep the real estate market from collapsing.

Until this sub prime hedge fund mess is cleaned up it looks like the Port Chester real estate market will be very slow.

The Port Chester real estate market is not totally dead there is still be a weak pulse.

It's not quite the cop's "nothing to see here, move along, move along." and I wouldn't panic......yet.

However, if you wake up one November morning and find a hedge fund guy in charge of school and property taxes.

Run for the hills!!!!

Port Chester sergeant retires as oldest officer in Westchester

STORY:

Sgt. John Suppa may not win many foot races, but says he's more than healthy enough to keep up with his job as the oldest police officer in Westchester County.

Unfortunately for him and other officers who look up to him, he'll no longer get that chance. Due to the state's mandatory age restrictions for police, Suppa's being forced to retire as he approaches his 70th birthday.

"I would definitely go beyond 70, but I've got to go by what the law says," said Suppa, a traffic sergeant whose last day on the job is tomorrow. He turns 70 on Sept. 14.

Suppa, a former construction worker, joined the Port Chester Police Department in January 1965 even though it meant a drop in pay. This was at a time Lyndon Johnson was president and astronauts had yet to reach the moon.

"I was born and raised in Port Chester and thought I could make a difference in crime," explained Suppa, who was one of several members of his family to serve. One of Suppa's sons reported to him when he was on the force before retiring on disability. His cousin, meanwhile, is a detective........

......A low-key guy, Suppa has warned fellow officers not to throw him any sort of retirement party.

The chief laughed when asked whether a party was planned, saying: "If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise."

STORY:

The rise in gasoline prices that took place earlier this summer may be paying off for drivers this month, a government report said yesterday.

The average price of regular unleaded gasoline dropped 6.7 cents to $2.771 last week and was 22.9 cents lower than last year, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said in a weekly report.......

......Joe Fortuna of New Rochelle, who paid $3.039 a gallon to fill his Acura sport utility vehicle at an Exxon station on Main Street in his hometown, said: "Gas is too high anyways. It's ridiculous."

He said he tries not to use his air conditioner if he doesn't have to. He said he also tries to take his foot off the gas pedal and coast for stretches when he's driving on the highway.

Megan "Slim Fast" Freeman doesn't throw her body onto the floor, slide about 50 feet and crash into a Plexiglas wall for just any sport.

The tattooed 32-year-old Port Chester resident recently founded Suburbia Roller Derby, Westchester's first amateur roller derby league.

"You get to be tough, bad ... aggressive. You get to be really athletic and then there's the part of you that likes to get all dressed up - you get to be a girly girl - all at the same time," Freeman said after she spit out a black rubber mouth guard. "It's incredibly empowering.".........

Greenwich 15s win Laureno

STORY:

STAMFORD - Greenwich pitcher Yuta Okazaki pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts to lead his team past Fairfield, 3-1, in the championship game of the 15-year-old tournament last night at Cubeta Stadium.....

......Port Chester, N.Y. beat Norwalk, 8-4, in the completion of a suspended game. Nick Pataski had an RBI double for Norwalk.

Port Chester also beat Harrison, N.Y., 4-1.

The 14-year-old playoffs begin tomorrow at 5:30 with the Stamford Hawks playing Port Chester. At 8 p.m., the Stamford Cardinals take on the Stamford Redbirds.

The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday......

Birthday bash sends Port Chester man to the hospital

STORY:

A 73-year-old man got bashed on his birthday.

Police said the Port Chester man, who turned 73 yesterday, was sitting in El Tesoro Restaurant, 14 Main St., when a young man walked up to him, said, "I don't like you," and punched the older man in the head.

A shirtless Jacquine Molina, 28, of 241 S. Regent St., Port Chester, was found running from the restaurant.......

One early August morning, three insane girls were joking around about their favorite movie, Zodiac, based on the serial killer of the 1960's in the Bay Area. Ashley and Melissa dubbed Zalex, whom had just come back from San Francisco the Zodiac killer. They decided to make a mini remake of the movie for fun. The next day, Zalex put it onto her iMacala, edited it, put in the outtakes, and posted it onto Youtube.
