11/21/07 - Port Chester Native And Greenwich High School Football Coach Rich Albonizio Was Honored In Greenwich

Greenwich Time

It was Ladies Night at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich last night courtesy of the Greenwich Old Timers' Athletic Association.

The Greenwich Old Timers' 47th Annual Awards dinner will always be remembered for being extra special as the first ever female local honoree and female national honoree were recognized before a crowd of more than 600 supporters....

...Albonizio, who has coached the Cardinals' football team since 1997, has certainly made his mark at the football popular school. The Port Chester, N.Y., native has compiled an .867 winning percentage through his first 10 years (111-17-1) and has guided GHS to five FCIAC championships and two CIAC Class LL titles. Prior to arriving at Greenwich, Albonizio built a winning program at Trinity Catholic in Stamford and led a successful squad at his alma mater, Port Chester High School.

Before giving teaching and coaching a thought, Albonizio considered following a religious vocation."I had a couple of choices, one of them of which was going into the priesthood," Albonizio explained.

"I went to Salesian High School in New Rochelle for a year, but they didn't have a football program. So the next year I went to Port Chester and it ended up being a very good choice.

"Indeed, while at Port Chester High School, Albonizio excelled at football, baseball and track and field and met his best friend, Carl Cairo. Cairo, who serves as one of Albonizio's assistant football coaches, introduced his longtime friend last night.

"Carl is the brother that I never had," Albonizio said.

"I met some of my best friends in life in high school."I'm glad that I chose to become a teacher and a coach," said Albonizio, who has worked as a physical education teacher in the Port Chester school district for 34 years. "It is a vocation to be proud of."

Albonizio, who drew great inspiration as a youngster from Reverend Peter Rinaldi at Corpus Christi Church in Port Chester, saw his four current Greenwich captains Jonathan Meyers, Chris Bisanzo, Phil Catalano and Jim Dunster pay tribute to him last night."

Coach is a big part of our lives and is very deserving of this award," Meyers said. "We have learned so much from him over the years."
