Two men were arrested for emptying a large oil drum at Rye Playland so they could sell it as scrap metal.
Frank Anfuso Jr., 52, of Rye, and Christopher Cannizzaro, 51, of Port Chester, were arrested this morning after workers there reported seeing them dumping 25 gallons of home heating oil near the edge of a parking lot, county police spokesman Kieran O'Leary said.
Booms and other materials were set up to contain the spill and keep any oil from reaching nearby Playland Lake.
The suspects were charged with knowingly and recklessly releasing hazardous materials, a misdemeanor, and trespassing, a violation. They were to be arraigned today in City Court.
"The two men apparently picked up the oil tank from a local business this morning intending to sell it for its scrap metal value," O'Leary stated.
They were emptying the oil from a 275-gallon tank that was inside a box truck, he said.
Police were assisted at the scene by the county Health Department, the state Department of Environmental Conservaton and the Rye Fire Department.
