PORT CHESTER - At 15 years old, in her first year of high school, Lauren Seliz found herself in a scary conversation - telling her mother she was pregnant.
"She didn't believe it, because I was always the good girl of the family," said Seliz, now 17.
Though abortions have become more common in Westchester in recent years, Seliz was among the nearly 600 pregnant teens who chose to give birth in 2005. She spent days at school having to run out of class to throw up, and eventually her belly became too big for her desk.
She stopped hanging out with her friends. And while she was in the hospital, enduring 14 hours of labor, the father of her baby was cheating on her with another girl, she said.
Although she loves her daughter, Kimberly, 2, Seliz tells other girls to wait.
"I tell them: 'You see what I'm going through. I don't get to go out anymore. I don't think you want this responsibility this fast," Seliz said.
