Port ChesterPoignant story about WWII vets
I enjoyed reading the Jan 11 story ("Veteran remembers sergeant who saved his life") of World War II veterans Carmine Scimia and Burt Keller. It is so poignant to hear the stories of the deep bonds these young men and women formed through their bravery and heroism while serving their country.
Back in November 2004, I had the privilege of being part of a reunion between my dad and his war buddy. My dad had not seen his friend in 59 years since serving together in the 8th Armored Division in Europe. To have viewed this touching moment still brings tears to my eyes.
Unfortunately, my dad passed away less than two years later, but I am so grateful that he had this brief reunion. To hear Mr. Scimia's story helped to bring back the fond memories of listening to my dad and his recollections of the war years. I miss him dearly.
God bless the World War II veterans, who are leaving us much too quickly.
